The Los Angeles Chargers are poised for a large-scale offensive overhaul at the hands of Mike McDaniel.
After Greg Roman's scheme fell short again and again in 2025, in part because of the lack of bona fide offensive protection and in part because of his inability to adapt to opponents' defensive attacks, Los Angeles decided it was time to bring in a set of fresh ideas. Each of the Chargers' offensive weapons has a chance to find a new complexion to their roles under McDaniel.
If Quentin Johnston, for example, can find some more consistency in his route-running and pass-catching abilities, his stock could quickly skyrocket as a downfield, explosive-play threat. The same goes for Tre' Harris. Omarion Hampton, meanwhile, should be fully unlocked as an explosive rushing and dynamic pass-catching threat in McDaniel's scheme.
But the true breakout candidate for the Chargers in 2025 is Ladd McConkey— who should, by all measures, be the number one option in McDaniel's YAC-centered air attack. Chargers fans are well aware that McConkey's dip in production in 2025 was not a result of his own shortcomings.
As we enter the new season, though, the league as a whole continues to sleep on McConkey's star potential. If things go according to plan, they'll soon be forced to wake up.

McConkey doesn't necessarily have the size or the explosive athleticism of most of the league's top receivers. At 6'0" and 185 lbs, he makes his impact out of the slot, presenting himself as a reliable target for Justin Herbert and evading tacklers in the open field after the catch.
In Roman's scheme, Keenan Allen was simply better-suited for duties as the primary pass-catcher. With Allen's return to Los Angeles, McConkey's numbers dropped across the board. He posted just 789 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 66 receptions last season.
But the heights that he reached in his rookie campaign— posting 82 receptions for 1,149 yards— should be considered his floor under McDaniel, not his ceiling. His skill-set is perfectly tailored for what McDaniel wants to accomplish through the air, and his target share should see a sharp increase under the new offensive system.
The league as a whole, though, continues to underrate McConkey. While Bucky Brooks' 2026 All-Breakout Team for NFL.com primarily focuses on second-year players, his choice at wide receiver was Emeka Egbuka— with no mention of McConkey. McConkey was even left off of Jeremy Fowler's wide receiver rankings for 2026, falling into the 'receiving votes' category and outside of either the top-10 or the honorable mentions.
But with matchups against weak secondaries in the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders to start the season, McConkey will have a chance to come flying out of the gates— in similar fashion to how Johnston did last season. The difference is that, given his projected importance to McDaniel's scheme, McConkey has a chance to sustain that over the duration of the campaign.
If he's able to surpass his rookie production and become the key to McDaniel's air attack, these lists will almost certainly need to reckon with McConkey by this time next year. He simply needs to seize the opportunity that's been placed in front of him.
