For the Los Angeles Chargers, Week 1 is obviously about coming away with a resounding win to get their campaign off to a good start.
If they're going to survive their brutal slate of Weeks 3-10 intact and put themselves in prime position for a playoff push, it's going to need to start with a pair of victories in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals and Week 2 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
They also have some questions to answer on both sides of the ball. Mike McDaniel will need to prove that his overhaul of the offensive line was effective, and Chris O'Leary will need to iron out any remaining wrinkles in his expression of the Chargers' zone-heavy coverage scheme.
But Los Angeles' Week 1 matchup could also have league-wide implications. It's not controversial to say that, as of now, Arizona is a top contender for the first overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. While they have some talent on the offensive side of the ball, they don't have the quarterback solidity nor the defensive infrastructure to truly remain competitive on a week-to-week basis.
If the Chargers blow them out of the water in Week 1, it could accelerate the process of Jacoby Brissett's replacement as the Cardinals' starting quarterback. If they somehow drop the ball, a Week 1 win for Arizona could open a clear path for a team like the Miami Dolphins or the Cleveland Browns to sneak into that spot as the season wears on.
The Chargers will get a chance to give us our first glimpse at the 2027 NFL Draft order
Brissett got his desired contract restructuring with Arizona this offseason, earning a one-year, $15.5 million deal that reflects his position as the team's starting quarterback. But the anticipation is that his role is not entirely secure. Carson Beck looked solid across his preseason appearances, and with veteran Gardner Minshew in the fold, it's likely only a matter of time before Brissett is replaced as the primary man under center for Arizona.
This is a team that, above all else, is gunning for the first overall pick. The 2027 NFL Draft projects to have a strong quarterback class—including Arch Manning, Dante Moore, and CJ Carr—and the Cardinals will be hoping to land their choice of one of those players by the time we arrive at next offseason.
Los Angeles has more than a solid chance to give them a head start in that race.
Their defense allowed just 179.9 passing yards per game last season, and while the Cardinals actually put up a relatively strong air attack, O'Leary's primary goal in Week 1 will likely be to stifle that however it proves to be possible. Combine that with the revamped Chargers pass rush and the pressure they'll be able to generate on the interior, and things could get ugly for Arizona rather quickly.
Even if the Cardinals don't sneak out with a win, though, a strong performance from Brissett could buy him extra time with the starting quarterback role. This would grant teams like the Dolphins and the Browns some extra opportunities to fall behind Arizona in the standings—especially when the Cardinals enter their easier portion of the schedule later in the season.
Either way, the result of the Chargers' Week 1 matchup could reveal a decent bit of how the race for the first overall pick will unfold across the NFL this season.
