Staggering Chargers star included on NFL trade block

Najee Harris just signed a one-year deal with the LA Chargers this offseason. Some think he might be on the trade block before ever playing a snap for the Bolts.

Kristopher Knox recently put together Bleacher Report's NFL trade block following the 2025 NFL Draft. While most of the names on the block make sense, Harris stands out as a staggering inclusion.

The entire reason for Harris' inclusion on the trade block is due to the Chargers drafting Omarion Hampton with the No. 22 pick. Throw in the UFA tender on J.K. Dobbins and suddenly, the Chargers' running back room seems overcrowded.

"The Chargers drafted their running back of the future when they took Omarion Hampton with the No. 22 overall pick. They might also be able to bring back 2024 starter J.K. Dobbins, who remains unsigned," Knox writes.

"Harris would have value on the trade market. While he was never a high-end starter in Pittsburgh, he was a durable high-volume back who topped 1,000 rushing yards in all four of his NFL seasons."

Chargers' Najee Harris surprisingly included on BR's NFL trade block

Knox lists the Dallas Cowboys and... surprisingly enough... the Pittsburgh Steelers as potential landing spots for Harris. Dallas could make sense as the team has not addressed the running back position but a return to Pittsburgh is completely out of the realm of possibility.

If the Steelers wanted to bring Harris back they would have just re-signed him. Why let him walk and then trad draft capital for him?

The entire premise of Harris being on the trade block falls apart when you look at it through that same critical lens. Even a team like the Cowboys doesn't make much sense as they could just sign a free-agent running back instead of trading for Harris.

Why trade draft capital if you can sign Dobbins without sending capital? Sure, Dobbins will count toward a compensatory pick in 2026, but that is still far cheaper than trading an established draft pick for someone who just signed for pennies in free agency.

It also makes no sense for the Chargers to even consider a Harris trade. Why would the team even shop him less than two months after signing him to a one-year deal? Sure, there is an influx of depth at running back, but there is no such thing as too much depth in the NFL.

It's not like Harris is on a bloated contract or a multi-year deal. He is on an incentive-heavy contract for one season. If Harris ends up playing a smaller role than expected then no harm no foul. But trading him removes the possibility of Harris being a productive member of the Chargers' RB room.

We can definitively say Najee Harris won't be traded by the Chargers before the start of the 2025 season. It doesn't make sense for either side of the trade.
