The Los Angeles Chargers certainly have their work cut out for them in 2026.
As much reason for optimism as there is with Mike McDaniel calling the offense and the roster as a whole starting to take on a deeper shape, Los Angeles will be still be faced with an absolute gauntlet of matchups. The rest of the AFC West has to face a similarly difficult schedule, but if Los Angeles is going to match or top the 11-win mark they've set in each of the past two season, they're going to need to quickly find their stride on both sides of the ball.
You'll notice that each of these five games are relatively close together, and there's a reason for that. Los Angeles will face a series of difficult matchups starting in Week 3 against the Buffalo Bills and ending in Week 10 against the Baltimore Ravens. Beyond that, they'll also have matchups against multiple other playoff contenders to reckon with in the later portions of the season.
The Chargers, of course, still have a chance to begin the season on a high note. But they're going to need to perform week-in and week-out if they want to even approach the ceiling of what they can accomplish as a team in 2026.
The 5 hardest matchups on the Chargers' schedule in 2026
1. @ Los Angeles Rams, Week 8
The Rams are, without a doubt, expected to be the most daunting team in the NFL this season after their acquisition of Myles Garrett and the return of Aaron Donald from retirement, and they will likely represent the hardest matchup on Los Angeles' slate this season.
This isn't a true road game, since it will be held at So-Fi, and the Chargers will have plenty of time to find their groove on both sides of the ball. They'll also be coming off their Week 7 bye.
But we saw what this offense is capable of with Matthew Stafford at the helm, and this defense has only gotten exponentially more formidable this offseason. The Rams totaled 47 sacks last season, but with the weapons they now have in their arsenal, it's hard not to envision that number bumping up significantly. This will likely be Los Angeles' biggest test, and if they can come away with a win they'll have given themselves a chance at a season-defining, post-bye week run.
2. vs. Houston Texans, Week 9
Of course, Los Angeles' two most difficult matchups of the season come in back-to-back weeks. But it's difficult to avoid how lethal Houston's pass rush should be this season. With Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson in the fold, the Texans should only continue to build upon the 47 sacks they totaled in 2025— and having these matchups in back-to-back weeks (even if they're by a technicality at home) is a brutal pairing for the newly-reformed Chargers offensive line.
While the Seahawks matchup (which we'll discuss later) won't be easy, these will be the first major tests for the Chargers' protection of the season.
The Chargers lost their matchup with the Texans last season by a relatively narrow score of 20-16. But if you factor in any growth for Houston's offense with some new pieces on the interior of their line, this matchup suddenly looks a lot more threatening.
3. vs. Denver Broncos, Week 5
Again, we return to the opposing pass rush—but it's hard not to given the teams that are on the Chargers' slate. Although this is at home as well, it will likely be Los Angeles' toughest divisional matchup of the season. The Kansas City Chiefs still have their major inconsistencies across their roster, and the second matchup against Denver won't come until Week 18, when the standings across the league are likely to have already been decided.
The Broncos had the most formidable defense in football apart from the Seahawks last season, and this early-season divisional matchup will provide Los Angeles with a chance to truly test the ceiling of its offense under McDaniel.
There's reason to project some regression for the Broncos in 2026, but not in terms of their potency on the defensive side of the ball.
4. @ Buffalo Bills, Week 3
Finally, we can focus on an opposing offense. Although the Bills should be relatively fine on the defensive side of the ball, having made some additions there this offseason and counting on the advancement of some of their younger pieces like Maxwell Hairston, this offense has a chance to be one of the NFL's best again this season.
Josh Allen and James Cook form one of the most daunting duos you can come across in the NFL on a week-to-week basis, and the injection of DJ Moore into the offense should provide a more consistent target for Allen in their air attack.
The Chargers defense under Chris O'Leary won't have much time to acclimate to the new season and their new schematic wrinkles—with matchups against the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders looming before this—so it'll be the first true test of O'Leary's ability to replicate what Jesse Minter was able to accomplish on that side of the ball over the past two seasons.
5. @ Baltimore Ravens, Week 10
Speaking of Minter, here's the chance for his 'revenge' game. It's not really revenge, per se, since he chose to leave the Chargers for a much-deserved head coaching opportunity with Baltimore. But Minter will certainly be looking to prove he has what it takes to beat his former boss in Jim Harbaugh, and this will be a pivotal matchup for both teams at this point in the season.
If the Chargers can cap off their gauntlet of Weeks 3 through 10 with a major win over the Ravens, they'll be in prime position to push for a playoff spot and perhaps even the AFC West title over the back half of the season. If the Ravens can earn a win here, they'll enter the heavily divisional portion of their schedule with a victory over one perhaps their toughest non-divisional opponent of the season.
Going on the road after back-to-back grueling matchups against the Rams and Texans won't be easy, either, and all of this adds up to make this one of the most high-stakes games on the Chargers' 2026 schedule.
