Rams add yet another player to NFL trade block who'd be perfect for Chargers
By Jason Reed
The LA Chargers are right in the thick of the AFC playoff picture after moving to 4-3 in Week 8. It would not be surprising to see the Bolts be aggressive at the NFL trade deadline considering the team is in the mix and wants to maximize its ceiling in 2024.
Los Angeles' biggest need is at the wide receiver position as the right addition can really elevate the offensive side of the ball. However, general manager Joe Hortiz is not the type to settle and if there is another trade target who makes sense then the Bolts will make a deal happen.
One team the Chargers should keep in their crosshairs is their co-tenants at SoFi Stadium, the Los Angeles Rams. A win in Week 8 alleviated trade talks around Cooper Kupp but there are other Rams who could be shipped out before the deadline.
Former All-Pro cornerback Tre'Davious White is one of those potential players. Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, White and the Rams are discussing options for his future, including a potential trade before the deadline.
Tre'Davious White would be a smart gamble for the Chargers to take
The defense has been the strongest side of the ball for the Chargers with the cornerback position fueling the success. While that may go against the idea of a trade, the best teams in the league lean into their strengths and add to them when possible.
This would be the Chargers' version of leaning into their strengths. As good as the cornerback room has been this offseason, Asante Samuel Jr. is on the IR and Kristian Fulton has dealt with lingering knee issues his entire career.
The rest of the cornerback room has stepped up but is rather inexperienced. Adding another rotational option with experience would only benefit the Chargers, especially as the team starts to play above-league-average defenses.
Every team the Chargers have played outside of the Kansas City Chiefs ranks in the bottom half of the league in points per game this season. That is not to say the Chargers' defense is fraudulent, but that this secondary has not been tested often against a truly great offense.
Adding White would simply add another safeguard for the Chargers to perform when they have to play teams like the Baltimore Ravens. White hasn't exactly been the same in recent years since the injuries started to pile up but the potential is still there. And if anyone can unlock it, it is defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.
White's regression in recent years also lowers his price. At the absolute most the Chargers would have to send a sixth-round pick for his services. If he does not have a market, the Chargers could pull off a deal with a seventh.
Even if it doesn't work out, that is a minimal cost for the Chargers to take a flier on someone who could have a massive upside. He may not ever return to All-Pro form, but there is a Pro Bowl-caliber cornerback inside of White who may just need the right defense to bring it out.
