There's a long list of Chargers free agents this offseason, with some more important than others. With over $80 million in cap space before making any money-saving moves, the Chargers are bound to be active in free agency this offseason.
Some of that activity will come in bringing big-name free agents back. But it's impossible to sign every single free agent, and there are some big names who may end up elsewhere as a result.
In a perfect world the Chargers would bring back the select group of free agents who are more important than others. This isn't a perfect world. Here's our best guess at where each of those free agents will land.
Predicting the landing spot for the 5 biggest Chargers free agents:
Khalil Mack - LA Chargers
Khalil Mack won't sign the most expensive deal for a Chargers free agent this offseason but he's still the biggest name. Mack has aged like a fine wine during his tenure with the Chargers and there's no doubt the Bolts will want to keep him around.
Mack naturally comes at a cheaper price given his age and at this stage of his career he is almost exclusively playing on one-year deals. The Chargers will deal with the loss of another edge rusher in free agency (spoiler alert), making it all the more important to lock Mack down for another year.
This won't take the Chargers out of the running for an edge rusher in the draft or even another option in free agency. Mack has been nothing short of a tremendous locker room leader during his time with the Bolts and there's no reason for that to change in 2026.
Odafe Oweh - Las Vegas Raiders
This is painful, we know. But in the long run, it won't be a bad thing that Odafe Oweh takes his talents up the I-15 to join the Las Vegas Raiders. Oweh's price tag is simply too hefty, giving the Chargers no option but to let him sign with the highest bidder.
Daniel Popper of The Athletic speculates that Oweh could command a contract as high as $25 million per year in free agency. As great as he was for the Chargers after being traded last season, that's far too high a price to pay with a Tuli Tuipulotu extension around the corner.
This opens the door for the Raiders to do what they do best: overpay a good player as if he is an elite player. Las Vegas has a track record of doing just this (remember when everyone was scared about Christian Wilkins?) and they also have a track record of bringing in former Chargers.
Las Vegas very well may have to replace Maxx Crosby this offseason. As one of two teams with more cap space than the Chargers, it would be fitting that they overpay Oweh to gift the Chargers a compensatory pick better than the pick they traded for him in the first place.
Zion Johnson - New England Patriots
There is a perceived market for Zion Johnson that's more expensive than the Chargers may be willing to pay. If Johnson's market cools then the Chargers will almost certainly bring him back to have some kind of stability on the interior. But with a premium price tag, the Chargers are forced to look elsewhere.
The 2022 first-round pick out of Boston College may be best suited to return to New England. The Patriots have a dire need for offensive line help, especially on the interior, and have the cap space to sell themselves on a Johnson deal.
Keenan Allen - LA Chargers
This is the one prediction on this list you can definitely take to the bank. Obviously, the goal for this prideful writer is to go a perfect five-for-five, but of all five picks, the Allen prediction is by far the most likely to happen.
All Chargers fans have to do is listen to Allen and the Chargers' front office to get an idea what will happen. Allen has been pretty clear in the past that he only wants to play in Los Angeles, while GM Joe Hortiz has openly said Allen is on the list of players he wants to bring back.
He may no longer be prime Keenan Allen but he is still a locker room leader who is productive in his reduced role. The Chargers will bring Allen back to be the leader of the WR room while also giving him a chance to win a Super Bowl ring with the franchise he holds near and dear to his heart.
Tony Jefferson - LA Chargers
There's certainly a gap between the four biggest Chargers free agents and Tony Jefferson. But the emotional reaction if Jefferson signs elsewhere will be just as large. Jefferson has cemented himself as a fan favorite in Los Angeles with strong play regardless of the role the Bolts give him.
There are some concerns that Jefferson could go back to Baltimore and reunite with former Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. While that is certainly a possibility, Jefferson's roots in Southern California may be too strong at this point in his career.
Jefferson was born and raised in the San Diego area and is known online for being a diehard Padres fan. There is a pretty decent chance he was also a Chargers fan. Plus, as close as Jefferson likely was to Minter, he has made it clear he is a pretty big fan of new defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary as well.
Jefferson has been a key member of the Chargers' defense for two seasons now. Don't expect that to change much in 2026.
