The LA Chargers were unable to make the playoffs in back-to-back seasons and instead had one of the worst records in the entire sport in 2023. When Justin Herbert went down with a finger injury the Chargers firmly entered tank mode and successfully moved up the draft board.

Thanks to the team's losing efforts, the Chargers now have the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. In such a quarterback-heavy draft, the Chargers have a real opportunity to land someone special that can change the direction of the franchise.

The Chargers also have the opportunity to throw the entire draft for a loop by trading down from the fifth overall pick. Regardless of which route the team takes, it is clear that the Chargers are one of the most polarizing teams in the 2024 NFL Draft. For that reason, Chargers fans cannot wait to see what the team does with the fifth pick.

But when will this franchise-altering decision actually happen? For Chargers fans who are busy and cannot tune into the entire 2024 NFL Draft, we got you.

What time will the Chargers be on the clock in the 2024 NFL Draft?

The 2024 NFL Draft officially starts on Thursday, April 28 at 5 p.m. PDT. Every team has exactly 10 minutes on the clock to make a selection in the first round. On paper, the Chargers should be on the clock 40 minutes into the night's festivities.

However, teams don't always use all 10 minutes and there are other factors that play into how long the draft takes. Thus, the most accurate thing to do is look at previous years.

Over the last five years, the fifth overall pick has been selected between 5:41 PDT and 5:58 PDT. Four of the five selections have happened after 5:50 PDT, however, so the 5:41 PDT selection truly was an outlier.

With this in mind, it is safe to assume that the Chargers will officially be on the clock around 5:40-5:45 p.m. PDT and the selection should be made official between 5:50-5:55 p.m. PDT.

The Chargers have two extra selections, obtaining a fourth-round pick from the Keenan Allen trade and a seventh-round compensatory pick from Drue Tranquill's contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. This is only the second time in the last 20 years that the Chargers have nine or more picks in the NFL Draft (2021).

If the Chargers trade down in the draft and pick up extra selections then it will be the first time since 2004 that the team has 10 or more picks in the NFL Draft. That is the same year the team drafted Eli Manning and traded him for Philip Rivers.
