Tuli Tuipulotu will be the X-factor of the Chargers defense in 2024
By Jason Gilder
Defense wins championships, right? That has been the belief for decades upon decades in the NFL, and it mostly proves correct. For the Los Angeles Chargers, significant improvements on defense are critical if they want to thrive in 2024 and begin building a Super Bowl contender for years to come.
The hiring of head coach John Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is an extremely promising start. The pair were instrumental in building a defensive culture at the University of Michigan, a tenure that was capped off with a National Championship.
But they will be tasked with turning around a unit that finished 28th in total defense by allowing 362.9 yards per game. There is still talent across the defensive depth chart, highlighted by former Pro Bowlers Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack, and Derwin James.
But in order for this side of the ball to vastly improve, an x-factor needs to emerge at the right position. That's where Tuli Tuipulotu comes in.
Tuli Tuipulotu is building off a strong rookie season
He was drafted 54th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft and proved to be an excellent value pick for the Chargers. The 21-year old is coming off a quietly strong rookie season and now has an opportunity to prove himself as a cornerstone of this defense for the long haul.
Tuipulotu recorded 4.5 sacks, 12 quarterback hits, and 53 total tackles in his premiere season a pro. And while the numbers do not appear as gaudy, the eye test showed another thing, as his explosiveness and improved technique helped him apply pressure on a game-by-game basis. He was recognized for his impact on the gridiron when he was named to the PFWA 2023 All-Rookie team.
The 54th overall pick in the 2023 draft now has the chance to emerge as a future centerpiece in this defense. He enters his second training camp under the guidance of the aforementioned Harbaugh and Minter, an extremely encouraging proposition for any young defensive player.
If there is anything the Harbaugh culture loves, it's a gritty player who performs with something to prove during training camp. It is reasonable to expect Tulipulotu will enter camp with that exact mindset because there is something to prove: that he can succeed aging stars Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa as the future of the front-seven.
Creating a pass rushing three-headed monster on the Chargers
But before Tulipulotu can even take the regins as catalyst of the front-seven, he has a compelling opportunity to create a mighty pass-rushing trio to threaten opposing quarterbacks on a weekly basis.
Despite their ages, Mack and Bosa are still among the elite pass rushers in the NFL, with the ladder generating a career-high 17 sacks in his second season with the Bolts. While Bosa has struggled to stay healthy at times, he is a force to be reckoned with when he is on the gridiron, thanks in large part to his relentless motor.
Adding a third viable piece such as Tulipulotu to those pass rushing efforts would make life a nightmare for opposing offensive lines. The former USC Trojan plays with the explosiveness that compliments the brute style that Bosa and Mack play with.
If Tulipulotu builds on that valiant rookie season, the Bolts will be able consistently unleash three dominant pass rushers at any quarterback. Not only does that lead to more sacks and QB hits, but it also forces the opposing passer into errant throws. And in a conference loaded with premier talent at quarterback, the Chargers would be wise to rely on the 21-year-old to fluster passers this season.
