3. Chargers trade down to 6th pick

giants trade

This would be the dream scenario for the LA Chargers in the 2024 NFL Draft. In this perfect scenario, the Chargers would be able to pick up an extra top-75 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, pick up an extra pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and still draft the exact same player they were going to take with the fifth pick anyway.

This all comes down to if the Giants are serious about taking a quarterback in this year's draft. If that is not high up on the team's priority list then they probably won't make this trade. However, if there is a quarterback who the Giants are very high on, and that quarterback falls to the fifth pick, then they may have to spring into action.

So why trade up one spot instead of just letting the Chargers take a receiver and then take said quarterback after? It all lies in the leverage the Chargers can create. If the Chargers can convince the Giants' brass that they will trade the fifth pick to Minnesota, then the Giants will be willing to trade draft capital to keep that from happening.

We saw this exact scenario play out in the 2017 NFL Draft. The San Francisco 49ers traded back one spot with the Chicago Bears so that the Bears could draft Mitchell Trubisky. In that genius move, the 49ers picked up a third and fourth-round pick in 2017 and a third-round pick in 2018.

The Chargers would rightfully get less than that as the fifth pick is not as valuable as the second pick. This would still be the perfect leverage play where the Chargers can draft Malik Nabers and still add depth with an extra third-round pick.
