Titans work out trio of failed Chargers after LA stole several impact players
By Jason Reed
The start of a new regime in Los Angeles under head coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Jim Hortiz resulted in the LA Chargers parting ways with a litany of players. Some players were free agents the team simply opted not to bring back while others were released at some point as they could not make the cut.
Much like how the Chargers brought in several players who once played under Hortiz on the Baltimore Ravens, there is one team that has seemingly put value on the players who used to wear the powder blue.
That team is the Tennessee Titans, who worked out an assortment of former Chargers on Tuesday. Tennessee worked out a trio of former Chargers running backs including Isaiah Spiller, Joshua Kelley and Elijah Dotson, along with former Jacksonville running back James Robinson.
The Titans signed one notable former Charger back in the spring, and ironically enough, the Chargers have brought in several former Titans players who are thriving in Los Angeles thus far.
Tennessee works out Chargers' rejects while Bolts thrive with former Titans
The Titans overpaid Kenneth Murray, signing him to a two-year, $15.5 million contract even though he was one of the worst starting linebackers in the sport with the Chargers. The results have been predictable, as Murray has been the same player with the Titans that he was with the Chargers.
Just because the Titans worked out three former Chargers does not mean the team will sign any of them but the irony of who they worked out should not be lost.
Kelley and Spiller were both fourth-round picks that did not pan out in Los Angeles (Spiller not even making it to the end of his rookie deal) while Elijah Dotson was a preseason standout who should have never made the team if the Chargers actually had a deep roster.
Like Murray, none of these players were success stories in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the Chargers have brought in several former Titans who have all been success stories thus far in 2024.
Cornerback Kristian Fulton has gone from one of the worst starting cornerbacks in the NFL to being a legitimate difference-maker on the Chargers. Elijah Molden, who the Titans traded to the Chargers shortly before the 2024 season, has been a valuable, versatile member of the secondary. Teair Tart has helped the Chargers shore up their run defense and Hassan Haskins has been a special teams menace for the Bolts.
All four former Titans have been productive in their various roles — all more so than Murray. And quite frankly, it would be surprising if any of these former Chargers running backs could even make half the difference that these former Titans are making in LA.
