Taylor Heinicke starts Chargers tenure with wild Jim Harbaugh-Michigan comments

What a bold thing to say during your first week on the new job.

The LA Chargers saw the horrendous backup quarterback play during the preseason and decided to do something about it. After cutting the roster down to 53 players last week, the Chargers traded a conditional seventh-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons for former Washington Commanders starting quarterback, Taylor Heinicke.

Heinicke has legitimate starting experience and is someone who can fill in for Justin Herbert for a short amount of time and keep the season alive. It became clear and apparent during the preseason that Stick could not do those things.

Heinicke kickstarted his first week of Chargers practice on Monday as the team heads into its Week 1 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

When speaking to reporters after practice in the locker room, Heinicke made the wildest admission about what he was doing when he found out he was traded which may not sit well with everyone involved.

Taylor Heinicke was watching the Michigan sign-stealing documentary when he was traded to the Chargers

What a wild thing to admit to on your first day at the new job. There is no better first impression to make than to tell the media you were watching a documentary about alleged cheating done by your new boss at his former company.

Harbaugh is a professional and this wild admission from Heinicke is not going to cause any kind of stir in the locker room. He was just being candid about what he was doing and Harbaugh is not the type of person that seems like he would look too far into that.

But still, it is a very bold thing to outwardly admit to the media, especially as the Michigan situation is ongoing and Harbaugh has outright denied any wrongdoing. It may not cause a rift, but with several former Michigan staffers on the Chargers' staff and even more on the roster, it is still a wild thing to say.

Alas, Heinicke doesn't really have anything to lose, either. He was traded for to be a backup and if the Chargers were petty enough to cut bait with him because these comments (they won't be) then he would just end up on another team backing someone else up.

The Chargers need Heinicke too much to let this impact his positioning on the team's depth chart in any way. However, it is interesting to think about what the conversations behind closed doors might look like after this.
