Steelers reveal which quarterback they plan to start in Week 3 against Chargers
Well, now Los Angeles’ defense will know who to prepare for when they face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3.
Heading into the season, Russell Wilson was expected to start for the Steelers after the team acquired him over the offseason. However, a calf injury sidelined him for the first two weeks of the season and allowed fellow newcomer Justin Fields to step into the starting spot.
Justin Fields expected to start against Chargers
It wasn't always been pretty, but the Steelers won both of Fields' first two starts for the team, so they enter the game against the Chargers with a 2-0 record. There was some question regarding if Wilson would be ready to return for the third game of the season, but it appears as though the Steelers are planning to stick with Fields as Wilson continues to heal.
"Really, we're kind of in the same posture as we were in last week with Russ," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "As I sit here today, Russ is not scheduled to be a full participant in practice, and so we're readying a plan that features Justin and his readiness."
It doesn't sound like anything is set in stone in Pittsburgh, but it seems like Fields starting his third straight game is the very likely outcome with Wilson still working his way back.
Assuming that Fields does start, the game against the Chargers could be a very important one for him in terms of hanging onto the starting spot moving forward in the season. If Fields stinks it up against Los Angeles, the Steelers would probably think long and hard about switching to Wilson, if he's healthy.
However, if the Steelers best the Chargers, who are also 2-0, and started the season at 3-0, it would be more difficult for Pittsburgh's coaching staff to justify making a switch at that point. If it's working well, why change it?
So, it will be very interesting to see how Fields plays against L.A. Chargers fans are obviously hoping he has a poor performance, as that would bode well for their team. The Chargers have been very stingy on defense so far this season, so it should certainly be a tough test for the former Chicago Bear.
If the Chargers are ultimately able to pull out a win over the Steelers, it will be their first 3-0 start to a season since 2002.
