Simi Fehoko emphatically clinches Chargers roster spot with big-time TD vs Cowboys
By Jason Reed
The LA Chargers entered the final preseason game of the year against the Dallas Cowboys with several roster questions that needed to be answered. In a perfect world, the Chargers would escape the Cowboys game with more certainty than they entered with.
However, that may not be the case as wide receiver Simi Fehoko has given the team a good problem to have. Fehoko continued his strong preseason by hauling in the Chargers' first passing touchdown of the preseason.
It wasn't any passing touchdown, as Fehoko was on the receiving end of a 78-yard bomb.
One touchdown is not enough to earn a roster spot but this is not a lone touchdown for Fehoko. The former fifth-round pick has received rave reviews from his head coach and looked like the best wide receiver on the field last week. If anything, Fehoko's big touchdown is an emphatic stamp on a much larger message.
Simi Fehoko proves Chargers cannot keep him off 53-man roster
If the Chargers are keeping the 53 best players from the preseason and not over-valuing draft status then Fehoko has to be included on the active roster. Fehoko has been the best receiver on the roster during the preseason and has earned his keep with the Bolts.
Fehoko won't be as impactful in the regular season as he will be buried a tad on the depth chart but he can still make a difference. In addition to being a reliable veteran backup, Fehoko also offers special teams value the other fringe receivers do not add.
This creates a difficult situation for the Chargers, though. If the team keeps Fehoko that puts the roster at six receivers, leaving no room for seventh-round picks Brenden Rice and Cornelius Johnson. Johnson being cut already seems inevitable but with Rice's upside, the Chargers may look to keep him around.
Fehoko has played well enough where he has earned that sixth receiver spot over Rice and his potential. Thus, if the Chargers are going to keep Rice the team is going to have to carry seven receivers, which is not the most common thing for teams to do.
However, the Chargers could get creative. The team can carry one fewer tight end or could carry one fewer running back. In theory, Derius Davis could be the Chargers' emergency RB4, allowing the team to carry three running backs and seven wide receivers.
Either way, the Chargers will have to be creative to keep both Fehoko and Rice on the roster. That or the team will have to waive Rice and pray no other team claims him so he can return to the practice squad.
