The Los Angeles Chargers made a huge move on Tuesday evening, inking star quarterback Justin Herbert to a massive five-year contract extension that should keep the team in contention for a Super Bowl for years to come.

While the Chargers haven’t had a ton of playoff success in Herbert’s first few seasons, there is no doubt that he is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL.

Now, his new extension is a sign that Los Angeles should be amongst the contenders for the Super Bowl for the foreseeable future.

However, oddsmakers don’t have the Chargers amongst the top teams in the latest Super Bowl odds – which the BetSided team broke down prior to the start of training camp.

Chargers Super Bowl odds for 2023 season

Los Angeles has a ton of talent on the roster, but the team has to shake off its collapse in last season’s playoffs when it blew a huge lead to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round.

That experience could be a good thing for Los Angeles, as Herbert and company were able to get a taste of postseason experience and know what they must do to avoid another collapse.

The Chargers have improved in each of Herbert’s NFL seasons, going from 7-9 to 9-8 to 10-7 in the 2022 season.

Playing in the loaded AFC West division is tough – especially since the defending Super Bowl champion, Kansas City Chiefs, have Patrick Mahomes locked up for several more seasons on his deal.

However, the Chargers are committing to Herbert with the hope that he can deliver a Super Bowl title by the end of his new contract.

A first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Herbert threw for 25 touchdowns last season (the lowest of his NFL career), but he did throw for 4,739 yards – the second highest mark of his three-year career.

At +2500, the Chargers have an implied probability of just 3.85 percent of winning the Super Bowl this season.

If the team can take a step in 2023, Herbert’s contract – and the team’s odds in the future – will continue to improve.
