Austin Ekeler had a career year for the LA Chargers in Joe Lombardi's offensive system in 2021 and proved to the NFL world that he truly is one of the best running backs in the league. Ekeler proved that he is more than just a receiving back and was fantastic in not only running between the tackles but finding the endzone.

While Ekeler was great, the rest of the running back room left more to be desired. The team has struck out on back-to-back drafts at running back in Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree. Justin Jackson finally started putting great snaps together consistently at the end of the season but he has been rather inconsistent in his career.

You cannot blame the Bolts for wanting to go in a different direction when it comes to the running back position. They are never going to spend big money on running back this season but they very well could sign a cheap RB2 to play behind Ekeler while also drafting a running back with one of four compensatory picks.

if the Chargers make the right signing and the right draft selection then the position could be special in 2021.

So which backup running backs are on the market for the LA Chargers to pursue?

In the following pages, we are going to break down the four free-agent running backs that would come at a cost-effective rate who would also be willing to be an RB2 in the Chargers' system.
