The 2023 NFL season for the Los Angeles Chargers was a disaster. They entered the season as a Super Bowl dark horse and finished with a 5-12 record and last place in the AFC West.

Sometimes bad results can lead to good news and that's what happened in the case of the Chargers. After firing their coaching staff, they hired the hottest name amongst head coaching candidates Jim Harbaugh, who is fresh of a National Championship with the Michigan Wolverines.

As a result, the Chargers' entire roster should take a significant step forward in 2024, including Justin Herbert, who played in just 13 games before suffering a season-ending injury.

Herbert was an MVP candidate last year, but now should we be buying even more stock in him now that he has Harbaugh as his head coach? Let's dive into the latest odds to win NFL MVP.

Justin Herbert is strong MVP candidate in 2024

Despite last year's tough season, Justin Herbert is once again among the favorites to be named NFL MVP in 2024. He's currently listed at +1300 at FanDuel Sportsbook to win the award, which is the sixth-best odds in the NFL. Only five players, including last year's MVP Lamar Jackson, are listed above the Chargers quarterback.

Despite battling bad coaching, injuries, and poor play from the rest of the offense, Herbert remained consistent. In his 13 games, he posted similar numbers to his past seasons including the exact same quarterback rating as he had in 2022 at 93.2 where he finished ninth in MVP voting.

Still, Herbert will need to take a step forward to truly be in the MVP conversation next year, and with Harbaugh as his head coach, he's certainly set up for success. We'll see what the Chargers end up doing with the rest of the offense but expect Herbert's name to be thrown around as an MVP dark horse in 2024.
