The first draft under new GM Joe Hortiz is officially in the books and it is safe to say that LA Chargers fans are happy with the class that the team came away with. The Bolts are welcoming nine new faces to the roster with several players who are going to not just start, but play important roles next season.
Los Angeles addressed most of its roster needs in the draft but there are still some areas that could use more depth. With plenty of cap space to spend at this point of the offseason, it is clear that the Bolts are not done after the draft.
The Chargers are doing to dip back into the free-agent pool to bolster the rest of the roster, especially with free agents not counting towards the compensatory formula after May 1. Let's dive into the free agents who Chargers fans should be circling.
Justin Simmons makes sense for the Chargers
The Chargers did not address the safety position in the draft but it is something the team can address with the extra cap space. Los Angeles does have Derwin James and Alohi Gilman in the room but there definitely is room for one more, especially if that one more is Simmons.
The depth behind James and Gilman leaves more to be desired and the Chargers would benefit from having another safety that can play two-high if James is moving around the defense. James is at his best near the line of scrimmage, so we may see the Chargers needing to play a third safety more often.
Simmons might seem like he is past his prime as he is on the wrong side of 30 but he is still coming off an exceptional years in which he was a second-team All-Pro. If the Chargers can bring him in with the remaining cap space it makes sense to do so.
