Chargers were wise to avoid Bobby Wagner
One of the biggest needs on the entire roster for the Chargers heading into the offseason was linebacker. The team's first cap-saving measure was to cut Eric Kendricks and with Kenneth Murray hitting free agency, the Bolts did not have a single linebacker with starting experience.
The Chargers have added to the room with cheap signings in Denzel Perryman and Troy Dye that should be good bang for the team's buck. Perryman is a good run defender still in his age and Dye is a great special teams player.
The room definitely needs more work, but the Chargers were able to add a somewhat decent foundation without having to break the bank. Thankfully, the guys they did sign were not risky, either.
Bobby Wagner would not have broken the bank for the Chargers as he only cost the Commanders $6.5 million. But even then, it would not have been a good move for the Bolts and if anything, would have been the kind of move that Tom Telesco would have made.
The Chargers were loosely tied to Wagner last offseason and there was some chatter around the team calling on the former All-Pro to fill the linebacker void. Thankfully, the Chargers did not put too much trust nor too much cap space for a linebacker who is definitely years past his prime.
