3 former Chargers fans would love to see return in 2024
By Jason Reed
The LA Chargers are entering a new era with a new regime in place that is led by head coach Jim Harbaugh. As the Chargers turn a page in the history of the franchise, Harbaugh will naturally rely on those he is familiar with. He has already done so in the coaching staff, and we may see him bring in players who he has coached before this offseason.
That is not the only homecoming dynamic that Harbaugh may rely on. Harbaugh and GM Joe Hortiz can right past wrongs and bring back former Chargers who probably should not have ever left in the first place.
The Chargers do not have a lot of resources this offseason but the team does have the means to bring in several cheap free agents. Among those are a few former Chargers that would be great to bring back.
3 former Chargers we'd love to see return in 2024:
Adrian Phillips
Adrian Phillips was released by the New England Patriots earlier this offseason and a reunion with him is something that everyone in the fanbase can get behind. His numbers were not amazing last season and he is past his prime but he can still bring a lot of value to a secondary that needs depth.
There are multiple factors that are working in favor of bringing Phillips back. Not only would he be a cheap veteran the team can sign to reunite with someone like Derwin James, but he also would not have any impact on the team's compensatory picks in 2025.
Because Phillips was released and was not a natural free agent he does not count towards the compensatory formula. That naturally gives Phillips an edge over other cheap veteran safeties this offseason.
Phillips should not be signed to be the every-snap starter next to Derwin, but he should be brought in to play a key depth role on Jesse Minter's Chargers defense.
