Upcoming Chargers free agents who are practice squad/backend roster players

The following Chargers are also unrestricted free agents after the 2023 season but they are not going to make much of a difference. Chances are that most of these players will end either being signed to future/reserves contracts after Week 18 or will be forced to play elsewhere in 2024.

  • Justin Hollins
  • Nick Vannett
  • Dean Marlowe
  • Will Grier
  • Tanner Muse
  • Essang Bassey
  • Jaylinn Hawkins

There are some names on this list that did have some kind of role on the Chargers. Dean Marlowe actually started four games for the Chargers at safety this season and at first, it looked like there was something there. However, as time went on, it was clear he was a backend roster player.

The same can be said for Jaylinn Hawkins, who came to the Chargers after being waived by the Atlanta Falcons this season. Essang Bassey also played a role on defense, but not to the extent that Marlowe and Hawkins did.

Tanner Muse and Nick Vannett were both on special teams for the Chargers and if Ryan Ficken liked them enough to keep them around then we could see them back with the Bolts next season. It is hard to say with a new regime coming to town, though.

Justin Hollins and Will Grier likely won't be with the Chargers next season. Grier is not a suitable backup quarterback option because if he was, the Chargers would have given him a chance to play before the season ended.
