It has long been accepted as the most likely hire that Jim Harbaugh would make but on Tuesday it was made official: Jesse Minter is the new defensive coordinator of the LA Chargers.

Minter follows Harbaugh to the Chargers from Michigan after putting together one of the best defenses in the entire country. It hasn't just been at the college level, though, as Minter has previous NFL experience that should bode well for him in Los Angeles.

Minter and the defensive staff do have work to do to fix where Brandon Staley went wrong and build up this defense personnel-wise. With limited NFL resources, the Chargers are going to have to rely on the draft and may look to bring in players who are familiar with Minter's defense.

3 Michigan defensive players the Chargers could draft to pair with Jesse Minter:

Kris Jenkins, DL

Kris Jenkins will probably go higher than anyone else on this list but he is the least likely to end up with the Chargers. To snag Jenkins the Chargers would likely have to use a second-round pick and taking a defensive lineman with a top-50 pick does not seem to be in the cards for LA.

That is not to say that Jenkins is a bad player. While he has room to grow in the pass-rush department, he is a great run defender and that is what the Chargers need upfront. The fact is that the Chargers have bigger needs and at least have some young depth at defensive line to fall back on.

All that being said, it is not impossible for the Chargers to land Jenkins. If the team trades back in the first round and picks up extra capital early on then the team could absolutely use a pick on Jenkins. There is also the chance that Jenkins falls to the third round. It seems unlikely now, but the draft board is a fluid thing that will continue to change.
