Chargers training camp takeaway No. 2: Quentin Johnston is getting rave reviews already

The Chargers selected Quentin Johnston with the 21st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and it was a surprising pick at the time. Los Angeles could have gone a multitude of directions with the team's first-round pick and Johnston was not someone who many had mocked to the Chargers in the draft.

There were some concerns around Johnston's game as he was viewed as a boom-or-bust prospect in the first round. His explosiveness and athleticism were very tantalizing but his struggles with drops and making contested catches naturally lowered his ceiling.

It can be hard to pinpoint how a player like this will transition to the NFL and Chargers fans still have to see Johnston in action against actual NFL defenses. But after a really promising minicamp and an explosive first day of training camp, fans are getting extremely hyped about Johnston.

Those in attendance at camp are raving about Johnston's acceleration and shiftiness with the ball. While his six-four frame does not match up with being a YAC receiver, the Chargers could have someone special on their hands that can catch the ball in the short part of the field and make defenses pay.

Johnston's development is going to be interesting to watch not just in training camp but as his rookie season continues. With such a deep receiver room he probably won't post huge numbers right away but we could be seeing the making of a legitimate WR1 in 2023.
