2 Chargers signings who have been great so far (and 2 who have been terrible)
By Jason Reed
LA Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz had a lot of work cut out for him when he was hired during the 2024 offseason. Former GM Tom Telesco left the team as a mess and Hortiz was tasked with fixing the books while also trying to field a competitive team in 2024.
As a result, Hortiz and the Chargers had to work around the edges when it came to adding external help. The Chargers brought in an assortment of new faces, most of which were signed for pennies on the dollar.
Some of these signings have been stellar for the Bolts early on in the 2024 season while others have fallen flat. It is impossible for a GM to bat 1.000, but it is important to look at how these signings have panned out thus far.
J.K. Dobbins has been great for the Chargers
J.K. Dobbins led the entire league in rushing through the first two weeks of the season as he was the engine that drove the LA Chargers' offense. Dobbins' production dipped a tad in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers but that is not to take away from what has been a great year thus far.
There were a lot of questions about Dobbins and whether or not he could be productive for the Bolts. Even the Chargers had these questions, as evident from the no-risk contract he signed with the team.
All in all, Dobbins is proving to be the best offensive signing for the Chargers and if he can continue playing at this level, will go down as one of the best signings in the entire NFL.
Bradley Bozeman has been disappointing for the Chargers
Dobbins has run the ball well despite not having great play from the center position. The Chargers signed Bradley Bozeman to be the team's starting center after he was waived by the Carolina Panthers and thus far, he has played like a player who was just waived.
Fans expecting Bozeman to come in and be a massive improvement over last season were setting themselves up for disappointment. That being said, Bozeman has still failed to live up to even the most modest of expectations.
Center is a long-term need for the Chargers as Bozeman is just a one-year stopgap option for the team. Don't be surprised if the Bolts spend big money or use premium draft capital on a center next offseason.
Kristian Fulton has had a career renaissance on the Chargers
Kristian Fulton was statistically one of the worst cornerbacks in the NFL last season so it was fair to be disappointed when the Chargers signed him over the offseason. After all, he was the only addition to a cornerback room that needed help.
Fulton has taken a massive step from where he was with the Tennessee Titans and has been legitimately good for the Chargers thus far. Fulton is playing the best football of his career under Jesse Minter and has been a key part of a stout Chargers defense.
The real test will be once Fulton and the Chargers play top-tier quarterbacks as Gardner Minshew, Bryce Young and Justin Fields are not the most daunting competition.
Gus Edwards is not enjoying the same success on the Chargers
Dobbins has been thriving and Edwards has been struggling. What was once viewed as a battle for RB1 has so obviously shifted in Dobbins' favor as Edwards has been well below average thus far in 2024.
The short-yardage back has carried the ball 32 times for 94 yards with a 40.6% success rate. Edwards' 2.9 yards per attempt is the third-lowest among running backs with at least 30 carries thus far this season.
If Edwards continues to struggle like this then it might be time to give Kimani Vidal a shot to be the RB2 behind Dobbins.
