Trimming a roster down to 53 players is tough work for any NFL team. For a new head coach and a new front office, it can be even tougher. That is exactly the situation LA Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz find themselves in.

There are no more preconceived notions or existing favoritism that will save players a roster spot. This is a completely fresh start for the Chargers in 2024 and the team is going to carve out the best 53-man roster possible.

In previous years, the roster would be cut from 90 players down to 53 in staggered stages. However, the NFL changed how roster cuts are done in 2023 and now they all come on roster cut day, which is August 27 this year. While the Chargers do not have the traditional staggered roster cuts this season, there are still players who have been let go by the team for one reason or another.

The Chargers' 53-man roster is official! You can find a position-by-position breakdown of the roster here.

Chargers cut Luis Perez, Donald Parham, Andrew Farmer, Ty Shelby

Former XFL standout Luis Perez did not make the roster after being benched in the final preseason game. Another former XFL standout, Donald Parham, also did not make the roster despite being a fan favorite for two years.

Chargers cut Isaiah Spiller, Alex Leatherwood, Thomas Harper

The Chargers parted ways with two disappointing draft picks on cut day. 2022 fourth-round pick Isaiah Spiller cut the boot while former Raiders' first-round pick Alex Leatherwood did not earn a roster spot. Thomas Harper did not make the team despite having a strong preseason.

Chargers cut Jaylen Johnson, targeting a practice squad reunion

Jaylen Johnson missed out on the 53-man roster and was cut by the Bolts on Tuesday. However, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the Chargers are interested in potentially bringing him back on the practice squad.

Chargers cut Savion Jackson for a second time

Savion Jackson was cut by the Chargers in early August, re-signed by the team later that month, and cut again on cut day. It is unlikely that he will stick around on the team's practice squad.

Chargers waive Zach Heins

Despite being circled as a potential standout UDFA for the Chargers in 2024, Zach Heins was unable to secure his spot on a roster that has a pretty lackluster tight end room.

Chargers waive Michael Mason to sign Isaac Rex

The Chargers needed to add to the tight end room, signing former BYU standout Isaac Rex ahead of the final preseason game of the year. To make room, the team waived defensive lineman Michael Mason.

Chargers waive Max Duggan, Leon Johnson

Max Duggan's tenure with the Chargers officially came to a close as the team waived him after the second preseason game of the season. Duggan will go down as one of the most questionable picks in recent Chargers history.

Chargers waive Jayln Phillips to sign Teair Tart

The LA Chargers bolstered their defensive line room on August 15 and to do so, the team had to cut ties with safety Jayln Phillips. This continues general manager Joe Hortiz' goal of working around the roster edges.

Chargers waive Chris Wilcox and Ben Mason

The Chargers made a pair of moves on August 13 to make room for two signings. Los Angeles signed linebacker Shaquille Quarterman and re-signed Savion Jackson, who was cut a week prior.

Chargers waive Praise Olatoke and Casey Bauman

The Chargers cut ties with two players after the first preseason game of the year against the Seattle Seahawks. Praise Olatoke was signed after working out with the team at minicamp despite not having any real prior football experience.

Bauman was the QB4 in a quarterback room that has really struggled while Justin Herbert has been injured. It made sense to move on from him as the team hones in on who might step up in the room.

Chargers cut Savion Jackson

The first player the Chargers cut ties with during training camp was defensive end Savion Jackson. Jackson was signed by the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina State in 2024 and did not do enough to earn a roster spot.

Jackson became a necessary cut for the Chargers to make as the team had to make room to bring in another quarterback. After releasing Jackson, the Chargers signed UFL standout quarterback Luis Perez, who will add much-needed competition to the quarterback room with Justin Herbert in a walking boot.

There is no guarantee Perez will make the roster and he might end up on this list of cut players as well. However, Easton Stick has not played well during training camp and a bad preseason could put the QB2 job up for grabs.
