3 Chargers in contract years primed for big seasons in 2023
By Jason Reed
There is a lot of talent on the LA Chargers roster. The Bolts were a playoff team last season and that was with a slew of injuries that would have derailed most other franchises. If this team can stay mostly healthy then there is potential for a deep playoff run in 2023.
Not only is the roster talented but the Bolts are naturally going to get a boost from certain breakout players as well. The easiest breakout players to predict often times are players on expiring contracts as they are playing for their next pay day. Putting together a great season in a contract year is a great way to ensure the next contract is a good one.
Not every Chargers player in a contract year is going to lit the world on fire but there are certain players we are circling as standouts that will increase their free-agent value in the process.
3 Chargers in contract years primed for big seasons in 2023:
1. Michael Davis
Michael Davis has had an up-and-down career with the Chargers. There have been times when he legitimately looks like one of the better CB1s in the entire sport and then there are times where it looked unlikely that he would even be on the roster.
There definitely was a learning curve for Davis in his first season under Brandon Staley and Davis himself admitted that there were off-the-field issues that distracted him. Once the team was forced to play him more with J.C. Jackson injured, Davis turned it around in 2022 and reminded Chargers fans just how good he can be.
Davis legitimately played like a top-10 cornerback in the NFL in the second half of the 2022 season and fans should be optimistic that he will continue that in 2023. Not only has he set the table nicely for himself but he knows he is playing for his next salary.
If Jackson returns sooner than expected and plays a role in this secondary, the Chargers could be very hard to throw against in 2023 with Davis playing a key role.
