2. Who is going to start at safety for the Chargers next to Derwin James?

The one starting position on the entire depth chart that is the biggest unknown is the starting free safety position. We all know that Derwin James is penciled in to be the starting strong safety but it is still unclear what the team is going to do next to him.

Quite frankly, the Chargers probably don't even know the answer to this question yet as it might have to get answered during training camp. There are definitely several directions the team can go but it likely will boil down to whoever is playing better at camp.

As of right now, Alohi Gilman probably has the best chance at starting at free safety next season. He has multiple years of NFL experience and really played well in the chances he was given ahead of Nasir Adderley last season. However, Gilman is not a guarantee.

The big variable is JT Woods, who is now entering his second year in the league after a disappointing first season. Brandon Staley himself admitted recently that they viewed Woods as a developmental player when the team drafted him in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. If that development is on schedule then he has a chance to start in 2023.

Hopefully, both guys end up playing really well in camp and it is a hard decision to make as the Bolts will have to choose between two qualified options. The deeper that the secondary can be in 2023 the better.
