3 Chargers practice-squad players who will undoubtedly make an impact in 2024
By Jason Reed
The LA Chargers trimmed the roster down to 53 players last week and as a result, fans had to say goodbye to several familiar faces. In some cases, this resulted in the Bolts losing out on promising young talent, such as safety Thomas Harper, who was claimed by the Las Vegas Raiders.
However, there is still a lot of talent for the Chargers to utilize on the practice squad in 2024. While these players did not make the 53-man roster for various reasons, anyone on the practice squad can have an impact in 2024 depending on what happens during the season.
There are three practice-squad players, in particular, who are destined to have an impact in Jim Harbaugh's first season in charge.
3 Chargers practice squad players who will make an impact in 2024:
1. Tre'Mon Morris-Brash
Edge rusher Tre'Mon Morris-Brash was the talk of the town during Chargers training camp as the undrafted free agent was impressing fans in attendance and the coaching staff. Morris-Brash followd this up with strong games in the preseason that were capped off with a pick-six against the Dallas Cowboys.
Because the edge-rusher room is so deep, though, the Chargers could not make room for Morris-Brash, who thankfully was not claimed by another team. Now the promising pass-rusher awaits his turn on the active roster, where he will certainly turn heads.
Injuries are inevitable in the NFL and expecting the Chargers to be 100% healthy all season is expecting disappointment. At some point, Morris-Brash will get his chance to shine and he will certainly seize the opportunity.
2. Tony Jefferson
Tony Jefferson had the best game of any Chargers player this preseason with a stellar showing against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. This was good enough to get Jefferson a spot on the initial 53-man roster, although he was eventually released after the team added Hassan Haskins, Elijah Molden and Taylor Heinicke.
This is a perfect example of roster manipulation and Jefferson won't stay on the practice squad for long. The veteran safety can be elevated three times before the Chargers have to sign him to the active roster, so expect Jefferson to play in three games before the Week 5 bye, where he will likely be elevated.
In the meantime, this allows the Chargers to carry three quarterbacks on the active roster and that probably won't be long-term. After Jefferson is added to the active roster, expect Easton Stick to end up on the practice squad.
3. Luke Benson
Tight end is one of the thinnest positions on the Chargers roster, naturally creating an opportunity for any tight ends on the practice squad. The three tight ends on the practice squad will be competing for a chance to play every week and of the three, undrafted free agent Luke Benson has the best chance of making a difference.
Benson simply has what the Chargers are looking for in the tight end position and as he continues to prove himself in practice he could even usurp Stone Smartt, who ended up as the TE3 simply out of necessity.
Benson has a lot of experience as a quality blocker with Georgia Tech and also has some receiving upside with his six-four frame and sneaky quickness. Benson essentially offers the same dynamic as Smartt, so if that does not work out then Benson becomes the easiest player to plug in.
