Chargers news: Offensive line suffers first injury of the 2023 season
By Jason Reed
If there is one thing the LA Chargers are synonymous with it is injuries. Last season the Bolts were one of the most injured teams in the league but were still able to win 10 games in the regular season and make the playoffs.
Injuries are naturally going to happen when playing football and expecting the Chargers to be completely injury-free throughout the year is silly. However, good injury luck can go a long way and the Bolts are hoping to get that in 2023 with J.C. Jackson's turnaround being a potential catalyst.
Unfortunately, the Chargers' offensive line suffered its first injury during the first week of training camp as right tackle Trey Pipkins is not practicing on Monday after suffering an injury in individual drills on Saturday.
Chargers news: Trey Pipkins suffers undisclosed injury at training camp
UPDATE (TUESDAY): Trey Pipkins is not practicing for a second consecutive day and has a sleeve over his lower right leg, per Popper. Pipkins' lingering MCL issues were in his left leg last season.
UPDATE: Brandon Staley provided "no significant update" on Pipkins' injury and said that he should be back at practice shortly, per Daniel Popper of The Athletic.
At the time of writing it is unclear exactly what kind of injury Pipkins suffered. However, the injury does not appear to be too serious in nature so the hope is that he won't miss any kind of playing time. We are still over five weeks away from the first game of the 2023 season.
Pipkins missed several games in 2022 with a lingering MCL injury. After months of rest, it appeared that Pipkins was at full strength heading into training camp. It is unclear if this is related to last year's injury.
If Pipkins' injury were to bleed into the regular season then Foster Sarell would be tasked with starting at right tackle. Sarell started several games in 2022 and turned in poor performances in each game. Sarell has been working out with famed offensive line coach Duke Manyweather, who played a big role in turning Pipkins' production around before the 2022 season.
As more details about Pipkins' injury become available we will be sure to update this article. Hopefully, for Chargers' fans sake and for Justin Herbert's sake, it is nothing serious for Pipkins and the Bolts.
