The 4-3 LA Chargers are facing a must-win contest in Week 9 against the 3-5 Philadelphia Eagles. After dropping a post-bye battle to the New England Patriots, the Chargers have acquired a two-game losing streak. Now in a more uncomfortable second place slot behind the Raiders in the AFC West, Los Angeles has to turn things around this week if they are to avoid some serious dents to their postseason hopes.

The Eagles have all the momentum in their favor as they prepare to host the Chargers after dominating the Detroit Lions 44-6 in Week 8. Though Detroit isn't the best measuring stick when it comes to their opponents talent, a win is a win. Philadelphia put up their most productive offensive and defensive performances of the season in the outing, and this game isn't going to be light work for LA to put away.

Recent shakeups are pointing to a much more interesting contest between these two teams than initially thought. That said, be mindful how you bet on this one.

The Chargers are balancing right on the edge of entering a slump. Two losses in three weeks isn't a big enough sample size to have earned them that title yet, but finding a way to lose to this Eagles teams would immediately thrust them into dangerous territory.

Looking ahead, LA faces a pair of inconsistent opponents in the Vikings and Steelers after Week 9. That has to raise these stakes a bit, as the Bolts need to prove they can beat the beatable teams. They also need to look at this week's contest as an opportunity to showcase their energetic offensive identity that has fallen away in their latest matchups. For that reason, expect LA to give it their all in Philly.

Two high-potential offenses are hungry to showcase their skill in what is a winnable game for both sides, so taking over 50.5 points is a smart move here.

A majority of those points could come from the Eagles rushing attack. Running backs Boston Scott and Jordan Howard each made a pair of trips to the endzone for a total of four rushing scores against Detroit. Philadelphia is using a dual-threat model in their ground game, and it would take a miracle for the Chargers' struggling run-defense to keep them out of the endzone entirely.

On the flip side, Justin Herbert is still one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the league. The Eagles have one of the better secondaries, but Herbert has the upper hand regardless. Especially in light of his disappoint performance last week, expect the young QB to make some key plays on Sunday.

Next. The Chargers don't need Cooks or Jackson. dark

Final score prediction: LA Chargers 30, Philadelphia Eagles 24.
