AFC West cornerbacks ranked from worst to best in 2023
By Jason Reed
1. Denver Broncos
- Patrick Surtain, Dammari Mathis, K'Wuan Williams, Riley Moss, Essang Bassey
The reason why the Denver Broncos have to at least be respected in the AFC West is because of their defense. The defense is not as good as when Vic Fangio was coaching but in terms of talent, the Broncos have some of the best players on that side of the ball in the entire league.
It mostly consists of Denver's secondary, which gives any quarterback in the league nightmares. Just look at the two games the Chargers played against Denver last season. It is not like Justin Herbert was having a field day against this defense.
Denver has the best cornerback in the entire division and having a true lock-down CB1 makes that much difference. While there are other CB1s in the division, Surtain is in a league of his own as one of the elite of the elite in the NFL.
Then behind him there is an up-incoming CB2 in Damarri Mathis, who played well in his rookie season and is only going to get better in year two.
This Denver cornerback room benefits from having an elite corner as well as really good safeties. That makes life a lot easier on these cornerbacks than others throughout the sport. With how they all played last season, it is really hard to deny the Broncos' cornerback room as the best in the division.
