Chargers mock draft, pick 85: Tyjae Spears, RB, Tulane

Running back surprisingly became the most interesting position on the entire Chargers roster this offseason. Austin Ekeler requested permission to seek out a trade and now there is no telling who will be the team's starting back in 2023.

With the market at its current state and Ekeler's desire to get a new deal, it seems unlikely that another team will fork over assets to bring Ekeler in. Ekeler might be back on the team for one last go in 2023 and if that happens, the team should still be drafting a running back.

Many Chargers fans' dream scenario is Bijan Robinson falling to the 21st overall pick but that seems less and less likely by the day. Instead, we may see the Bolts draft someone who can complement Ekeler if he returns but can also be thrust into a bigger role if needed.

That is what the team is potentially getting in third-round running back Tyjae Spears. Spears has been compared to Tony Pollard, making him an enticing potential prospect to pair with new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

Spears can make an impact in both the running and passing game and he showcased his ability to do so with Tulane. In his senior season, Spears rushed for 1,581 yards on 229 carries and added an additional 256 receiving yards on 22 catches. He found the endzone 19 times as a runner and two times as a receiver.

Need someone to replace Austin Ekeler's touchdown production in the red zone? Spears is a solid, young option that might be able to do just that for cheap.
