Brandon Staley's back!

And by back I mean some people are tweeting about him. And by some people I mean around 12. But isn't it kinda fun, in a weird, nostalgic way, to be reading Brandon Staley blogs in 2024? Oh not at all?

Ever since getting fired last December after giving up 63 points to the Raiders, Staley's been out of sight, out of mind for not just Chargers fans, but anyone who kinda liked Staley's approach to games at first. He had the right idea, kinda, and things just went off the rails because it's the Chargers. He walked so Dan Campbell could run.

But there were some real galaxy-brain issues with Staley at times, and if you can believe it, he hasn't changed in the last 11 months. Staley's now working with Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco, and recently some hawk-eyed 49ers fans noticed some of the same maddening tendencies that Staley just couldn't quit showing up on their own film.

Brandon Staley's doing the exact same things in San Francisco and 49ers fans are furious

The QTs are tough here, but I'll be honest: I finally get how funny this is now. It's a good bit. It's way better when it's not happening to you in the middle of a crucial divisional road game in December, but it's a good bit. To be fair to Staley, there truly isn't a single team out there that could see Nick Bosa dropping into coverage – especially on Justin Jefferson – so in that sense, he does always have the element of surprise. Gotta keep those other coaches on their toes! He knows analytics say that sacks are such a pointless and arbitrary stat that he doesn't even need to rush the passer.

In a way, it's sad for 49ers fans. Now they have coaches on both sides of the ball that will absolutely make a borderline-indefensible and equally confusing decision in a big moment sometime this season.
