Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season is officially here, and the Chargers open at home against the Arizona Cardinals. It's a big game, as the Bolts look to start the season strong while bringing in a number of new faces on both the coaching staff and the roster. Mike McDaniel looks to revamp an offense that Greg Roman left in shambles during his time in Los Angeles. He has a plethora of young talent to work with, but no player has more to prove in Week 1 than second-year running back Omarion Hampton.
Week 1 is Omarion Hampton's chance to announce himself
The Arizona Cardinals appear to be headed for another bottom-five finish this season. Last year, they fielded the eighth-worst run defense in the NFL. What did they do to fix that? As you might expect from an organization that doesn't appear focused on winning right now, not much. Losing run-stuffing defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson to the Chargers certainly didn't help their chances of improving against the run.
Week 1 is Hampton's chance to officially put the league on notice. In limited action during 2025, Hampton showed flashes of a player who could quickly become one of the NFL's top running backs. A freak injury against Washington all but ended his season, but Chargers fans never entered the offseason questioning whether Hampton would play a major role in the offense this year.
The addition of McDaniel has only added to that excitement. Fans are hopeful that a true, modern passing attack will keep defenses honest instead of allowing them to stack the box and dare the Chargers to throw.
The Chargers have struggled to establish a consistent ground game for what feels like nearly a decade. If Hampton comes out against Arizona and starts the season with a statement performance, who knows what kind of boost that could provide for the entire offense? He's a true physical specimen, and that should allow him to run between the tackles even if the interior offensive line isn't elite. Considering his size, he still has another gear and can bounce runs outside behind two All-Pro tackles on any given snap.
The Chargers are heavy favorites to open the season 1-0, and fans are as excited about this team as they've been since Jim Harbaugh was hired. But the player who has the best opportunity to show the football world he means business isn't one of the new additions. He's entering his second season.
Hampton has the perfect first matchup against a Cardinals team that already looks to be building toward 2027. He should be ready to make his mark on this game and show the rest of the league that the Chargers finally have the dangerous rushing attack they've been missing for years.
