Odafe Oweh trade proves Chargers may miss Joey Bosa in hindsight

Was letting Bosa go the right decision?

The Los Angeles Chargers had a perfectly good reason for letting Joey Bosa go in the offseason. He was going to be a $36 million cap hit and given his declining production and injury concerns, the Chargers couldn't justify paying him that kind of money.

While Bosa went off and joined the Buffalo Bills in the offseason, the Chargers hoped that the group of pass-rushers they had would be enough for the 2025 season. While the team's 14 sacks gives them the fifth-most sacks in the league through the first five weeks, the depth in that department could certainly be better.

Fortunately, the Chargers addressed that by trading for Odafe Oweh of the Baltimore Ravens, who had 10 sacks last year. That kind of production will be valuable with Khalil Mack out but it goes to show that maybe the Bolts should have just stuck with Bosa in the first place.

Chargers may have just made the move that proves Joey Bosa’s worth

Sure, Bosa was worth a ton of money but they weren't exactly drowning in debt. They could have afforded to pay him and keep him in Los Angeles and benefitted from the big sacks that Chargers fans grew accustomed to seeing from him. Now, while they get a younger option in Oweh, they'll be on the hook for his $13.25 million salary this year and might end up extending him, therefore paying him even more money.

Bosa could have been a nice player to have during Mack's time on IR and this is a prime example of that. Parting ways with him wasn't a bad move by any means but had he still been with the Chargers, it's doubtful they'd have had to make this trade.

Also, for what it's worth, Bosa has appeared in all five of the Bills' games so far this year and has two sacks and four quarterback hits. Oweh had yet to notch a sack for the Ravens but their entire defense is a mess so maybe that wasn't completely on him.

Hopefully, this Oweh move ages as well as Chargers fans think it might but it does feel like the team might have some regrets with how the Bosa situation played out.
