The LA Chargers have one of the most stable coaching situations in the league this offseason with Jim Harbaugh previously saying he didn't expect the team to make any changes. While there have been some interview requests for Chargers coaches, for the most part, the Bolts should be able to run it back with everyone.

There is always room for additions, though, and the Chargers could look to do that with the latest coach that just hit the market.

Los Angeles has notable ties to the Baltimore Ravens due to general manager Joe Hortiz's previous tenure with the team. These ties showed up in the hires of Jesse Minter (who came with Jim Harbaugh from Michigan after an initial stint with the Ravens) and Greg Roman, the former offensive coordinator for Baltimore.

Because of these ties, the Chargers are a team to monitor for defensive coach Chris Hewitt, who mutually parted ways with the Ravens on Wednesday after 13 seasons with the team.

Chris Hewitt could join Chargers coaching staff because of Ravens connections

Hewitt was with the Ravens dating back to 2012, where he started as a defensive backs coach under Jim Harbaugh. Hewitt served in that role through the 2019 season and was eventually promoted to pass defense coordinator.

After two years in that role, Hewitt added secondary coach to his title. After two years, Hewitt became the assistant head coach in addition to being the defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach.

Minter actually coached directly under Hewitt during their shared time in Baltimore. The Chargers defensive coordinator was Hewitt's assistant defensive backs coach for one season in 2019 after spending several years as a defensive assistant. Minter was promoted alongside Hewitt and removed assistant from his title before eventually leaving to become Vanderbilt's defensive coordinator.

Hewitt has deep ties to John Harbaugh that far predated his time with the Ravens. This sudden divorce may seem like a bad omen for Hewitt's potential relationship with Jim Harbaugh, but that likely is not the case at all.

Instead, it seems likely that Hewitt is simply looking for a change of scenery where he can have a better chance at landing a defensive coordinator job in the future. It is not a coincidence that this decision was made after most of the defensive coordinator positions have been filled (or have leading candidates). This feels like a career move for Hewitt.

Hewitt would not be the defensive coordinator in Los Angeles but he could view the Chargers as a better long-term fit. Minter received head coaching buzz early in the season and could leave the Chargers for a promotion in 2026. If that happens, Hewitt, with all of his experience, could be in line to replace Minter.

Of course, this is all speculative as Hewitt has not announced his next move yet. For what it's worth, the Chargers do not currently have a defensive pass game coordinator, creating an open spot for someone to come in and fill.
