Kayode Awosika should still have the inside track to Chargers' starting LG job

The Los Angeles Chargers have plenty of roster decisions to make between now and Aug. 30. But needless to say, everyone's eyes will be on their ongoing battle for the starting left guard battle.

Not only is it the only starting spot still to be decided, but it's been a major storyline for the Chargers ever since they opted not to make a splash move in free agency at the position— instead selecting Jake Slaughter in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft and setting the stage for Kayode Awosika and Trevor Penning to compete with him for the position.

At a certain point, it seemed like Slaughter might have finally been breaking through and taking the job for himself. But the season-ending ACL injury to Tyler Biadasz put an end to that. Slaughter was suddenly slated to be the Week 1 starting center, and that left the competition open again for Awosika, or any other number of linemen, to put their stake down.

Now, almost a week after Biadasz's injury, offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has given us a glimpse at where things stand. Although Trey Pipkins III is still in the mix (having taken first-team reps over the past three practices), it is apparently almost Awosika's "job to lose" with just under a week until the Aug. 30 roster cutdown deadline.

Although things can obviously change, it seems as though Awosika is still in prime position to claim the job for himself— and, given his competition, he likely should be.

Even after the injury to Biadasz and Slaughter's move to center, there were numerous ways things could unfold.

While Awosika has performed strongly during camp and the preseason, the Chargers have consistently tested Pipkins' abilities at guard with first-team reps in practice. We've been down this road before—when Pipkins played 705 snaps at right guard in 2024—and we have a general idea of how low his upside is at the position. But Los Angeles was at least willing to experiment.

While Penning was presumably out of the competition after a series of uninspiring showings in the early portions of training camp, there was also a chance for 2025 sixth-round selection Branson Taylor to make some noise before things were wrapped up. But Taylor went down with an apparent upper-body injury in the preseason matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, and he's now missed the past three practices. One would imagine that any opening Taylor had would now be closed.

In a sense, then, you could say that Awosika ultimately has claimed the lead in this competition by default.

But there's reason to believe he has upside at the position. He found moderate success over four years with the Detroit Lions, starting 11 games over four seasons and exhibiting the type of athleticism that McDaniel has clearly sought out in his protectors. Awosika also spent three seasons under Ben Johnson's scheme, which requires versatile linemen to execute his mix of zone and gap run approaches.

There's reason to be confident in Awosika's ability to close this battle out, especially considering that McDaniel has expressed confidence in Awosika as far back as the offseason program—when he took first-team reps at guard over Slaughter before the pads even came on. Neither Pipkins nor Taylor can provide even that sort of pedigree at the position, and that means Awosika should be the favorite from here on out.
