Justin Herbert has taken immense punishment under center behind a beaten and battered LA Chargers offensive line. That punishment caught up to Herbert on Sunday night against the Pittsbugh Steelers, causing his first injury scare of the season.
Herbert was awkwardly tackled in the second quarter and got his right ankle caught underneath a Steelers defender. Herbert was slow to get up and had a noticeable limp for the rest of the drive.
The Chargers quarterback dealt with ankle injuries that significantly hampered his mobility last season. With Herbert's legs developing into a key aspect of his game, any lower-body injury is one worth monitoring.
Justin Herbert injury updates:
Update: Herbert played the entire rest of the game and looked awesome, well, because he is awesome.
Update: Herbert was seen talking to athletic trainers on the sideline after suffering the injury. Trainers proceeded to wrap Herbert's injured ankle with heavy wrap.
The training staff also wrapped Herbert's other ankle, which was not caught up in the tackle. It's unclear if Herbert injured both ankles on the play, or if the wrap is purely precautionary.
Herbert came into Sunday night's game with 305 rushing yards, which is one yard shy of his career-high. The Chargers' QB set a new career-high with a first-half scramble against the Steelers. Any injury that impacts Herbert's ability to scramble will have a massive impact on the Chargers' offense.
