The Rashawn Slater injury reporting this offseason has been tricky to follow. After initially being injured in San Diego last week, Slater returned for the next two days of practice. But then HC Jim Harbaugh gave him a rest day on Saturday. The Northwestern product also didn't practice on Sunday or Monday. It became three straight missed practices for Slater after what was supposed to be one rest day.

At the podium on Tuesday, Harbaugh was asked about practice participants first. WR Quentin Johnston and CB Tarheeb Still have minor injuries they're working through, per Harbaugh. Harbaugh also announced that Slater would miss his fourth straight practice on Tuesday. But he gave a little more background on the injury than he had before.

Jim Harbaugh finally gave the media an update on Rashawn Slater's injury.

Harbaugh said by saying he "thinks" Slater's injury is minor. He also gave everyone some clarity that it was "muscle related". Harbaugh explicitly said that it was not related to Slater's repaired patellar tendon.

I don't want to speculate too much based on that opening statement, but a soft tissue injury somewhere on his left leg is likely what we're dealing with. That's at least a promising update compared to if he had reinjured his knee or patellar tendon. To be clear, Harbaugh would not confirm if it was a left leg muscle issue in this press conference. But beat media in San Diego confirmed that was the area trainers were working on during the August 4th practice.

Per Harbaugh, Slater is scheduled to speak to the media after practice. He would not give specifics past what he had said on the injury and directed reporters to ask Slater directly.

While it's confirmation that it probably was a setback that could linger for a bit, it's still better than the alternative of Slater re-injuring the surgically repair patellar tendon. If there was a time to have a soft tissue injury, it's towards the beginning of training camp as opposed to during the season. It's also not a completely unexpected injury. Remember that these last few weeks of practice are essentially the most football Slater has played consecutively since the Houston playoff game in 2024-25.

We'll also see how long this sidelines Slater. While Harbaugh said he thinks the injury is minor, he also intends to play the starters next week for a drive vs. the 49ers. If it is truly "minor", perhaps Slater would be able to go and get some continuity going with the rest of the offensive line. But I'll wait and see on the coaching staff's generally vague description of injuries.

Hopefully, Slater is able to recover in time for the regular season. For now, it sounds like the Chargers have avoided a much worse scenario.
