Jim Harbaugh essentially just guaranteed a roster spot for fringe Chargers player

The Chargers claimed RB Hassan Haskins off of waiver claims before the creation of their 53-man roster last year. Ever since then, Haskins has been a mainstay on Jim Harbaugh's team. At one point, it was thought that the former Michigan man would compete with names like Kimani Vidal and Raheim "Rocket" Sanders for a spot on the roster. But it has become clear that his spot is in no danger.

Harbaugh said this today at his media availability when asked about what the fourth-year running back has shown in camp:

"TED. There every day," Harbaugh started. "He'd be one of the poster people for that. Top core special teams player. You need a good run-Hassan, right there willing-ready, willing and able to give it to you. Football player."

Even with the uncertainty of the Najee Harris situation hanging over the team, Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh makes one thing clear-Hassan Haskins roster spot is safe.

Haskins notably did not play in last week's game vs. the Rams. He had no reported injury or missed practices prior to the game. Evidently, the Chargers coaching staff had seen enough. We'll see whether or not he plays this week, but LA's coaching staff essentially narrowed down a running back competition for the possible final RB roster spot down to the aforementioned Vidal and Sanders.

Unfortunately for Vidal, he left practice earlier this week with an injury. Harbaugh was asked about it and said he was working through something. That's obviously a major opportunity for Sanders to possibly beat him out for the RB3 spot if Najee Harris cannot start the season.

On Harris, Harbaugh initially said he had no updates. Then he was asked about a possible NFI placement for Harris and said this:

Harris has not practiced since the Chargers opened training camp over a month ago. With just two weeks to go until the season, it's appearing the odds of him playing in Week 1 are getting dimmer and dimmer. The former Steelers RB has reportedly only done light jogging and walking on the field away from practice with a weighted vest on.

While uncertainty is out there about the status of Harris or the roster spot Vidal and Sanders are fighting for, one thing is clear. Haskins will be on the teams' 53-man roster. Harbaugh and the coaching staff have made it clear where they stand on one of their primary special teams stalwarts.
