After all the speculation, the saga has finally come to an end. Olaivavega Ioane is a member of the Baltimore Ravens, with the Ravens having selected him at 14th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Early in the draft process, Ioane was seen as a shoe-in for the Chargers at 22 nd overall. But as the draft got closer, it seemed less and less likely that Ioane would fall their way. The Ravens were the foremost contender for his services given their needs along their offensive line, but teams like the Detroit Lions, New York Jets, and the Pittsburgh Steelers also stood in the Chargers' way.

Ioane ultimately went off the board at the earliest slot where it was realistic, and it represents the first major move Jesse Minter has made as head coach of the Ravens. For Chargers fans, this one stings a little extra.

Olaivavega Ioane goes to the Ravens in disappointing draft scenario

As much as Baltimore needed a guard, the Chargers certainly needed one more desperately. After a surprisingly stagnant initial wave of free agency, Los Angeles is currently left with Cole Strange and Trevor Penning as their starting offensive guards for 2026. The hope in this draft will be to bring in a player who can immediately compete with Penning for that spot.

Ioane would have been the ideal choice for the job.

Through 11 games at Penn State, Ioane allowed just four pressures and zero sacks on 311 pass blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus. He has the size and the fundamental skill-set to be immediately viable at the NFL level.

He joins a Ravens squad that is poised for a major turnaround under Minter and new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. With a re-shaped offensive line and some continuity among the skill weapons, Doyle has a full arsenal to play with. Combined with their addition of Trey Hendrickson in free agency, Minter has already done an excellent job replenishing Baltimore's roster.

Losing Minter was already painful enough for Los Angeles. After leading the team to a top-10 defense in back-to-back seasons, however, he more than earned his shot as a head coach.

For the Chargers, trading up into that range to try to grab Ioane was never an option. But the Ravens springing for Los Angeles' dream prospect only serves to add a little more salt to the wound that was already opened by Minter's departure.
