Jesse Minter's departure was inevitable. He made a name for himself as one of the best coordinators in football with the LA Chargers and the perfect job in Baltimore opened. It was just a matter of time until the news became official.
Minter's Ravens staff is starting to take shape, while the Chargers have already replaced him with someone from his coaching tree: Chris O'Leary. While it sucks to watch Minter leave, it's safe to say that all parties ended up in a good spot after the amicable breakup.
In fact, Minter continues to do Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers solids even though he is with an AFC contender. The Ravens announced the first big hire of the Minter era, and to the surprise of some, it wasn't someone from the Chargers coaching staff. Instead, Minter hired former Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver to be the team's defensive coordinator.
Jesse Minter does the Chargers a solid by not poaching the coaching staff
Minter very well could have brought someone from Los Angeles with him in an elevated role in Baltimore. That kind of move is not that uncommon, and there's nothing the Chargers could have done if it came with a promotion.
Steve Clinkscale was the biggest name Chargers fans were worried about. Los Angeles' secondary coach interviewed to replace Minter and was a favorite for the job. With the Chargers ultimately hiring O'Leary, there were some concerns that Clinkscale could go with Minter.
Defensive line coach Mike Elston is another name Minter could have brought with him to Baltimore. Instead, he hired a former Ravens coach in Weaver, who interviewed for the same head coaching vacancy that Minter did.
This all boils down to the respect Minter has for Harbaugh, who essentially got him this job in the first place. Minter isn't the head coach of the Ravens right now if Harbaugh doesn't bring him to the NFL when he was hired by the Chargers. Who knows, he might've just been cracking the NFL as a coordinator.
Unfortunately, Jim's own brother may not have the same hands-off approach. The New York Giants interviewed Chargers quarterbacks coach Shane Day for the team's vacant offensive coordinator position. No hire has been made yet, but Day would be a huge loss for Mike McDaniel's staff.
Time will tell if Minter regrets having this approach, especially if Clinkscale continues to ascend in the NFL coaching hierarchy. This will surely be a headline when Minter hosts his former team in 2026.
