The Giants have made a change at starting quarterback. After three weeks of Russell Wilson leading the offense, the decision has reportedly been made to give the job to Ole Miss rookie Jaxson Dart. ESPN's Adam Schefter was first to break the news.
The Giants sit at 0-3 after another rough outing by Wilson vs. the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football. Earlier in the week, Giants HC Brian Daboll said that the team was "evaluating everything" in regards to the quarterback position.
Chargers DC Jesse Minter will get to go up against a rookie quarterback debut from Giants QB Jaxson Dart
The Giants had select packages designed for Dart. In total, he's played six snaps over the last two weeks. Obviously, the magnitude of his first start is different.
Wilson did seemingly play himself out of being the Giants starter. Aside from the losses piling up, the former Steelers QB hasn't come close to rehabilitating his perception around the league. He threw two interceptions against Kansas City this week and had his lowest NFL passer rating since 2021 (43.8).
Dart does at least have a rushing ability that the Chargers will have to account for. But aside from that, throwing the rookie in against Jesse Minter's defense is a bold choice. The Chargers are fourth in the league in points per game allowed at just 16.7. They also rank as a statistical top 10 yardage defense against both the run and pass.
There was probably an easier game to throw Dart in against the Saints next week if they wanted. But clearly, the Wilson experience was dreadful enough to the point where it didn't matter.
Minter and the Chargers will look to spoil Dart's NFL debut at 10 AM PT this Sunday in New Jersey. While LA is dealing with their fair share of injuries, there should be no excuse for this game against the Giants to be anything less than a two possession win. Certainly, the secondary will need to clear up some of the communication issues that forced them into some defensive breakdowns vs. Denver.
