Drue Tranquill left the LA Chargers for the dark side in 2023 and has fully embraced the villain role as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Tranquill and the Chiefs advanced to the Super Bowl on Sunday with a win over the Buffalo Bills and now look to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive championships. Like every Chiefs playoff game, the win was not without controversy as several officiating moments are now being dissected in the public eye.
The former Chargers linebacker (and the rest of the Chiefs, for that matter) don't seem to care at all about the referee narrative surrounding Kansas City. In fact, Tranquill took it as far as to call out the narrative after being the Bills, telling anyone who subscribes to the theory to, and I quote, "kick rocks".
Former Chargers LB Drue Tranquill tells Chiefs' doubters to "kick rocks"
Tranquill certainly didn't mince his words here and it is hard to blame him for being empowered. After all, he and his team once again proved it is the most dominant team in the AFC and are now looking to make history that has never been done before.
That being said, to say the Chiefs don't benefit at all from questionable officiating is also a farce. That's not to say that the league is rigged and the NFL is purposefully setting the Chiefs up to succeed. Officiating in the NFL is simply inconsistent, and the Chiefs are always on the biggest stage to benefit from that inconsistency.
And you have to give it to the Chiefs, they actually capitalize on all the questionable calls that go in their favor in big spots. The entire reason why we all remember the bad calls is because they always proceed some kind of Chiefs score. Not every team is able to do that, which is why it seems worse for the Chiefs.
But then again, these referees are human and even if they are doing it subconsciously, there could be some slight favoritism towards Kansas City. Teams that have established dominance are often on the right side of 50/50 calls. That is how it worked with the New England Patriots, how it worked with the Golden State Warriors, and so on.
Now the Chargers need to just build up a reputation as a true contending team so they can receive the same kind of calls the Chiefs do. If the referees called Chargers games like they called Chiefs games then they would have rightfully called C.J. Stroud's intentional grounding in the endzone, giving the Chargers a safety and turning that entire game on its head.
And who knows, maybe then the Chargers would have gone into Arrowhead and upset the Chiefs as they are more familiar with them than any other team in the league.
But the Chargers didn't do that, and now, Tranquill and the Chiefs are heading to New Orleans. There is sure to be questionable calls in that game, too.
