Former Chargers HC candidate gets fired, gets pitched to replace Greg Roman

Even in successful seasons where the playoffs are a near lock there is something to complain about with the LA Chargers. At least, that is what the temperature appears to be after the team's 17-14 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

After a game where the offense struggled and failed to find the endzone fans were quick to point out the work offensive coordinator Greg Roman has done this season. To be fair, Roman was not a popular choice when he was hired and the numbers are disappointing this season. Los Angeles ranks 18th in points for and 24th in total yards.

Even with a lack of weapons in the passing and running game, many consider this to be unacceptable with Justin Herbert under center. For that reason, even in a successful season, many have called for the Chargers to reconsider a long-term pairing with Roman.

Some of those same fans now have their target for who they want to replace Roman (even though he isn't going anywhere). Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, and Chargers player, Eric Bieniemy has been fired by UCLA and is reportedly looking for a return to the NFL.

No, the Chargers won't hire Eric Bieniemy to eventually replace Greg Roman (nor should they)

Those calling for Bieniemy to solve this Roman conundrum are hoping for a pipe dream. This is not a decision the Chargers will make, regardless of the fact the team interviews Bieniemy for a head coaching job in the past.

First of all, as long as the Chargers make the playoffs (which they are most likely going to) then Roman's place on the coaching staff is safe. Even an offensive meltdown in the playoffs likely won't be enough for this new regime to part ways with him.

Roman has connections to both Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz. Those connections will keep his job, especially after just one season where the Chargers can pin any offensive miscues on the lack of weapons.

And even if the Chargers were to make the surprising decision to part ways with Roman, there is nothing on Bieniemy's resume that indicates he would be a good hire for the Bolts.

Bieniemy was long credited as a potential head coach candidate because of his time as the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator. However, as time has gone on, it has become clear that Kansas City's success was because of Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, not because of Bieniemy.

Bieniemy had the chance to prove he was an innovative offensive mind in 2023 with the Washington Commanders. With him as the offensive coordinator, Washington finished 25th in the league in points scored (going down from 24th the year prior). UCLA finished 117th in the country in total offense with Bieniemy calling plays.

Roman isn't going anywhere and the Chargers have no reason to ever be interested in Bieniemy. Sorry for those who are hoping otherwise.
