The LA Chargers didn't take a massive swing during the offseason but it is never too late to do so. Los Angeles has the resources to make a big move before the 2025 season, and some think that big move may involve Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander.

Back in February, it was reported that the Packers were open to trading Alexander before the start of the 2025 season. The entire foundation of an Alexander trade is built around his contract, as the Packers likely want to move on from the final two years of his contract (which have a combined cap hit of over $51 million).

The Packers haven't found a trade partner to this point and some believe the Chargers may be the best team for Green Bay to call. ESPN's Matt Bowen broke down the best fits for the remaining free agents and trade chips, circling the Chargers as the best option for Alexander.

"The Chargers signed Donte Jackson to a two-year deal and Benjamin St-Juste to a one-year contract this offseason," Bowen writes. "However, if Alexander is available in a trade, he would be seen as an upgrade in Jesse Minter's defensive system. The Chargers are zone heavy, playing both single-high Cover 3 and split-safety schemes.

While the Chargers have a strong foundation at cornerback with sophomores Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart, it is worth questioning the other moves the team made at the position. Donte Jackson has shown flashes, but hasn't been consistent, while Benjamin St-Juste was so bad that Commanders fans celebrated his departure.

Adding a veteran corner like Alexander who has proven he can play at a Pro Bowl level would take the Chargers' defense to a new level. With Alexander, Hart, Still, Derwin James and a good safety room, the Chargers would have the best secondary in the league.

There are also Casey Hayward Jr. parallels that Chargers fans can get behind. Hayward had a very successful tenure with the Chargers after his Packers tenure. Perhaps Alexander could do the same.

Of course, as it the case with any trade in the NFL, there is inherent risk involved. Alexander has dealt with injuries in each of the last two seasons, playing a combined 14 games. He's missed significant time in three of the last four seasons with his last Pro Bowl season coming in 2022.

That being said, Alexander still played well in the games he did play the last two years. While he was not at his best, he still played well above-average despite the injuries.

The other risk is the contract. However, if any team has the means to absorb Alexander, it's the Chargers. Los Angeles has the most expected cap space for 2026 and can create more space this upcoming season by extending Rashawn Slater.

Sure, that would reduce the cap space next year, but the Chargers can more than afford a Slater extension with one extra year of a big Alexander cap hit.

The Chargers have the resources, and some already think they are a great fit for Alexander. The question now becomes whether or not the team pulls the trigger.
