Mekhi Becton was the most impactful (and most expensive) free-agent signing the LA Chargers made this offseason. The Chargers desperately needed interior offensive line help and found it in the defending Super Bowl champion.
After getting a career year out of Becton, the Eagles turned to 2023 third-round pick Tyler Steen to replace him as the starting right guard. Steen had some baggage heading into the 2025 season, leaving Philadelphia fans worried about how the team would fill Becton's spot.
Those concerns are likely quelled after the Eagles' Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night. Steen didn't just fill in for Becton, he legitimately impressed in what was the best game of his young career. Steen's best play of the game was on a Saquon Barkley touchdown run, where the guard literally blocked his man almost all the way to the endzone, "Blindside" style.

Eagles don't miss a beat without Mekhi Becton, which may worry Chargers fans
If Becton was an established commodity who had years of success on his resume, then there wouldn't be questions about whether or not he can replicate his performance from last season. However, that isn't how Becton's career has gone.
Becton was considered a first-round draft bust prior to his one-year stint with the Eagles. He couldn't stay healthy with the New York Jets and never turned into the franchise tackle they were hoping for.
The Eagles signed him on a whim, converted him to guard, and he put together a career year. But after seeing another troubled player succeed in the exact same situation, it's worth questioning how much of Becton's success was due to the system he was in.
To be fair, there were still some holes in his career year. Becton actually finished with the exact same pass block efficiency rating as Bradley Bozeman and Zion Johnson on Pro Football Focus last season. That's not the greatest sign.
Thankfully, Becton has the opportunity to instantly dispel any of these concerns in Week 1. He is suiting up against the same team he just beat in the Super Bowl and another strong game against Chris Jones and the Chiefs will do wonders for Chargers fans' confidence.
But the flip side is also possible. If Becton struggles in his first game with the Chargers, compounded with potential struggles from his interior offensive line teammates, then fans may start to actually worry.
Especially after how well Steen played on Thursday night.
