In an offseason where the LA Chargers have been linked to acquiring wideouts like DK Metcalf or Tee Higgins, another connection might've potentially been made by an NFL insider.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler wrote this morning that New York Jets receiver Davante Adams is intrigued by the possibility of coming back to California.
Adams will need clarity on where he stands with the Jets this season. While he is technically under contract, the three-time All-Pro carries a larger $38.3 million cap hit. The future of teammate Aaron Rodgers is also likely something to watch for in New York.
This was Fowler's full section on Adams potentially moving this offseason from his notebook:
"The Jets must address the future of receiver Davante Adams, whose $38.3 million cap hit is untenable. A source told me Adams is intrigued by a return to the West Coast and would be open to potentially joining teams such as the Rams or Chargers -- if he gets released. I would put the 49ers in the conversation, too. Adams grew up in Northern California."
Davante Adams potentially interested in joining Chargers this offseason
It seems that the external interest as Fowler writes is primarily in a world where Adams is released. His cap hit in a hypothetical trade for the Jets could be a limiting factor.
If Adams wants to remain on the Jets, there are solutions to his current cap hit. A restructure would save $27 million for New York this season. However, his 2026 cap hit would then balloon up to $47 million.
Per an interview with the Golf Channel, Rodgers has talked to the Jets and is in the process of figuring out what he wants to do this offseason. As mentioned earlier, the Jets' decision on Adams could hinge on what they do with their 41-year-old quarterback.
As for the Chargers, it makes all the sense in the world if Adams becomes a free agent. He has yet to slow down and has posted 1,000+ yards in seven consecutive seasons. Adams averaged 2.96 yards per route run vs. man coverage in 2024, a testament to his separation ability even as he ages.
A short-term deal with Adams would give the Chargers some life on offense as they enter the offseason. A true bonafide outside wideout would also decrease some of the stress on the current receiver room, particularly Quentin Johnston. One would also imagine that Adams is likely more cost-effective than Metcalf or Higgins at his age.
We'll have to see if Adams becomes available, but there are not many better fits on the open market for the Chargers and Justin Herbert if he is released by New York.
