The Kansas City Chiefs shocked the world with a blockbuster trade on Wednesday, sending star cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Chargers' cross-town rival, the Los Angeles Rams. Now, the Chargers' path to winning the AFC West has gotten a whole lot cleaner.
One of the signs of the downfall of a dynasty is trading away its best players. Patrick Mahomes is likely out for the 2026 season, and now McDuffie has been shipped to the Rams for the 29th overall pick in this year's draft, along with a 5th-, 6th-, and 3rd-round pick.
With this trade, it is clear that the Chiefs know what Chargers fans have known for a while: Kansas City is not going to be competitive in 2026.
Trent McDuffie trade reminds Chargers that 2026 is a gap year for the Chiefs
McDuffie, a 2-time Super Bowl Champion, is coming off a year with 63 tackles, an interception, and a sack. He was ranked No. 81 in the "NFL Top 100" rankings, showing the respect the league has for the young corner. Now, he will be a member of the Los Angeles Rams, who made it to the NFC Championship last season. This is not a player you move when having championship hopes for next year.
If you are a Chargers fan, a matchup with the Chiefs seems a lot more manageable now, especially on offense. When it comes to competing in 2026, the Chiefs have essentially waved the white flag. Next season, Justin Herbert won't have to worry about the stellar McDuffie covering his best wide receivers. You add Mike McDaniel into the mix, and now you have a weapon against the Chiefs like none other.
A trend with the Chiefs has been established. Develop young corners by avoiding paying them by shipping them off. In 2024, Kansas City did the same by shipping L'Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans after placing the franchise tag on him. The iteration of the dynasty that terrorized the NFL started to sunset with the trade of both star corners.
With both Sneed and McDuffie out of the Chargers' hair, only one team remains in their way. Next season, the AFC West will likely be a two-team race between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Denver Broncos.
It's time for the Chargers to level up
McDuffie will no longer be a problem for the Chargers. The Chiefs won the AFC West 9 times in the last 10 years, with the Broncos breaking the dominant streak last season. The last time the Chargers were able to capture the AFC West title was in 2009.
With what seems to be the end of the Chiefs' dynasty finally arriving, the Chargers need to take advantage and become the new king. In 2026, they have all the tools to do so. With a threat down in their own division, the addition of Mike McDaniel, and a healthy offensive line, the Bolts are primed to win their first division title since the late 2000s.
