The Chargers' much-anticipated schedule release is out. Here's the best detail from each matchup on the schedule.
Breaking down the Chargers' schedule release video matchup by matchup
Our week 1 matchup against the Cardinals is expected to be an easy win for the Chargers, and the social media team didn't hold back when making light of the Cardinals being a joke of a franchise. Between the lack of a clear starting QB and the defense being anemic last year, the Chargers had a lot to work with in terms of poking fun at the NFC West bottom feeders. Even going beyond the sport of football, the video mocks the Arizona Coyotes fleeing up to Salt Lake City, only rubbing more salt in the wound that is the history of sports in Arizona.
However, the most brutal and under the radar shot towards a coach in the video didn't come during the Patriots' section, but during the preview of the Cardinals, where the social media team reminds everyone of the inferior Cardinals' social media team wishing Coach Gannon a happy birthday before firing him less than 24 hours later. The Chargers own social media team is much more in sync with the team it's associated with, it seems.
Week 2 is a matchup against the Raiders, and the tried and true joke of Raiders fans in prison cells will always get a solid laugh, but if you weren't looking closely, you might have missed the jab at Las Vegas' new ownership in the top left corner as the security camera filter is overlaid. Tom Brady, now part-owner of the Raiders, has a long and storied history with recording other teams.
That's not the only joke at Brady's expense in the first Raider matchup clip, either. Posted on the wall behind a grunt are the letters "AE + TB", standing for Alix Earle and Tom Brady respectively. The 48 year old and 23 year old allegedly were seen together on New Year's Eve. Even in separation, Brady and Belichick seem to be tied together, and the Chargers social media team seemed more eager to get at the future Hall of Famer than the divisional rival in this clip, maybe out of pity for the team. Comedy is better when punching up.
Week 3 presents the matchup against Buffalo, and is overlaid with Cam Newton's viral rant about Keon Coleman. If you aren't familiar, Coleman had a viral moment early in his NFL career himself, where he was celebrated for his suit and his demeanor in interviews, but it quickly wore thin on Bills fans as he failed to make much of an impression on the field. Unless the young receiver makes massive steps this offseason, he'll be known more for his diet than his performance on the field. If Coleman fails to post a solid statline against the secondary week 3, this clip will see some reposting. Of course, the team didn't fail to throw shade at Buffalo as a city, either, with chime-ins from the Heated Rivalry cast tucked away in the corner.
Our week 4 matchup was nothing but respect for the reigning OPOY and Superbowl champion, Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The Emerald City Route Artist is shown, in Halo, dissecting a number of different defenders, taking them down one-by-one, with specific reference to former Chief Trent McDuffie in particular as Smith-Njigba will have the opportunity to cut him up twice a year in-division. However, the rest of Seattle wasn't spared, as Cal Raleigh's dumpling store is shuttered in the background. Another sign in this set reads, "12th Man Market Center, for sale", reminding Seahawks fans of how quickly things can change when a team is sold.
The social media team didn't hold back for the first meeting with the Broncos. The incessant altitude mentions Denver fans love so much are immediately mocked not once, but twice. The week 5 clip is about as close of a representation to the actual Bills-Broncos matchup this past season as one can create in Halo, complete with Bo Nix having his ankle blown up with a sticky grenade.
Following the first Broncos clip, the Chargers navigate to the "main menu" section, which is chock full of digs at the Kansas City Chiefs, the matchup for Week 6.
The Chargers also made fun of the downright criminal calls that have historically gone in favor of the Chiefs, with a tiny "(owned)" tag under the suit of Zebra Armor. And, of course, when opening up the Donna Kelce Renovation Package, a quick slideshow of some of the Chargers' greatest moments against the Chiefs in recent memory flash by. Seeing that frame of Derwin James Jr.'s hit on Travis Kelce will never get old.
A grim reminder disguised as a relaxing trip is injected in the video as Chargers fans have to cope with an early bye this week coming in the midst of a murderer's row of defenses. Unfortunately, even with the great work on this video, the Chargers still have to face the early bye.
Week 8 is at the Rams. Wide receivers have consistently been easy content for the social media team to poke at, and Puka Nacua is no exception, with his locker room livestreaming incident last season being recreated in Halo. While the main focus is on the Puka incident, a recreated Instagram Live chat scrolls by in the background, where the Ty Simpson pick is ridiculed.
Week 9 sees a recreation of CJ Stroud's "big bro" moment with Caleb Williams, and also a reference to Kevin Durant's recent exposure for using a burner account, with the Houston basketball star sending a friend request to CJ Stroud from "GetHigher77". This comes after an embarrassing elimination from the Lakers this NBA postseason, and is a reminder of just how superior LA sports are to Houston.
The Chargers play the Ravens in Week 10, and this clip is packed full of references. From the unfortunate theft of defensive coordinator Jesse Minter being met with gracious well wishes, to the clear and main joke surrounding a potential Maxx Crosby trade being cancelled by the Ravens, there is a degree of respect shown for the Ravens organization. However, the clearest joke at their expense quickly passes by, with a reference to Tyler Loop's unfortunate missed kick in their Week 18 game against the Steelers last season. While a Maxx Crosby matchup would have been interesting to experience, and seeing Crosby in a competently run franchise would be scary, the Raven matchup won't be nearly as scary without him.
Week 11 has the Chargers playing the Jets, and the video doesn't hold back against their defensive woes last year, with a -203 point differential and no interceptions. This section is jam-packed with New York references beyond football, with references to former NYC Mayor Eric Adams gaining Albanian citizenship, Mayor Mamdani promising to fill plenty of holes, Timothee Chalamet's presence courtside at basketball games, and a poorly timed tweet by Ben Stiller. The rivalry between LA and NYC is probably more interesting than any football product the Jets will put on the turf monster this year.
Week 12 is against another AFC East team, the Patriots, and the short section they have completely rips them to shreds. Between an easy regular season, a divisional round that posed no challenge, and an AFC Championship against the Broncos most reliable quarterback, the social media team points out just how easy the path was. Of course, there was the Wild Card round, but that isn't important. This section includes one of the most talked about jokes in the video, a message from the New York Post. However, that joke shouldn't overshadow the shoutout to Mack Hollins' disgusting habit of walking around barefoot, or the dig at Stefon Diggs' tendencies.
Week 13 sees the Chargers traveling across the country to Tampa Bay to play against the Buccaneers, the first of two trips out to Florida, and focuses entirely on the team's wide receiver history. The main focus of this clip is the transition from Mike Evans to Emeka Egbuka, but in the background, one can quickly see a reference to Antonio Brown's infamous exit.
Week 14 revisits the prison where Raiders fans are kept, and shows their true tendencies if freed. While this section doesn't add too many new aspects, the bottom right corner of Bradyvision does show the Chargers-Raiders scores in their past two meetups: 20 - 9, and 31 - 14 respectively.
For Week 15, the Chargers match up against San Francisco, and this section of the video takes place in a substation, one of which has been the focal point for conspiracies in San Francisco as of late. However, from a team management point, a quick jab at the Brandon Aiyuk situation slips by in the form of a chat message while the game shows various 49ers getting injured by the substation.
Week 16 takes the Chargers to Miami in an egregious scheduling decision by the NFL. This section is pretty straight forward, and shows the reality of the Dolphins' situation. A rusted tank swivels and "cuts" three impact players from the team.
Weeks 17 and 18 revisit the Chiefs and Broncos respectively, and the release comes to a close. However, don't think the Chargers social media crew spared any team in their ridicule. The closing screen is chock full of references to other teams the Chargers don't play this season, such as the Eagles' failed bunny morale boost, or the Titan's Cam Ward's controversial remarks on his team.
This year, like many in the past, was a great schedule release video for the Chargers, and is something I've looked forwards to from the team every year since they started doing them. This year's was certainly not a disappointment, and it's safe to say the Chargers won schedule release week once again.
