Chargers' top rumored trade target is officially off the market

At one point, the LA Chargers were seen as a possible trade destination for Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert. The Eagles' tight end was on an expiring deal after the 2025 season and Philadelphia never outright denied reports of him being shopped.

If the Super Bowl Champion was going to remain with the Eagles, it sounded like something would have to give. The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane reported early on Wednesday morning that Goedert and the Eagles have agreed to a reworked contract for the 2025 season. Goedert took about a $4 million pay cut that he can make up with about $1 million in extra incentives.

Dallas Goedert is no longer a viable trade target for the Chargers

How invested the Chargers were on the tight end trade front may never be known. Former Jets TE Tyler Conklin signed a one-year deal with the team in late March. However, it wasn't such a large contract that it precluded them from exploring the market if they wanted to do so.

In the 2025 NFL Draft, Los Angeles traded up with Philadelphia to select Syracuse TE Oronde Gadsden II in the fifth round. As it stands, the depth chart appears to look something like:

  • TE1: Tyler Conklin
  • TE2: Will Dissly
  • TE3: Oronde Gadsden II
  • TE4: Tucker Fisk
  • End of roster: IPP TE Jordan Petaia, TE McCallan Castles, UDFA TE Stevo Klotz

Technically, the Chargers aren't out of trade options for tight end if they wanted to upgrade the position. Baltimore hasn't clarified the future of Mark Andrews, who was placed in similar trade rumors as Goedert prior to the NFL Draft. He obviously has some history with the current front office.

However, the Chargers seem content with the tight end position for the time being. It does feel like a trade would've happened at last month's draft if it was going to happen. As GM Joe Hortiz has said, they'll always scour the league for talent. But the top two or three of the group does seem set.

Conklin has participated in the second phase of the offseason program while Gadsden II will participate in rookie minicamp later this week.
